Overview

Firestar's three grandchildren have learned of the powerful prophecy that foretells their destinies, and the responsibility of deciding the Clans' future weighs heavily on the three apprentices. But each secretly yearns for power: Lionpaw dreams of being undefeatable in battle, while Hollypaw longs to be a great leader and Jaypaw knows only he can see the true past and future for them all. Their strengths are tested when ThunderClan is suddenly attacked—and all four Clans are thrown into a battle unlike any the cats have ever seen.

Then a dark shadow falls across the forest, and a mysterious stranger warns the Clans of more trouble to come. For the first time, it appears that StarClan does not hold the answers the cats need.

All of a sudden, the warrior code is being tested. A crisis of faith threatens to tear the four Clans apart and destroy what the cats have built their lives upon. . . .

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter
Erin Hunter

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

    1. Also Known As:
Erin Hunter is the pseudonym for three writers: Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes

Warriors: Power of Three #5: Long Shadows SNY

Chapter One

The moon was huge, a golden circle resting on a dark ridge of hills. Stars blazed above Hollyleaf's head, reminding her that the spirits of her ancestors were watching over her. Her fur prickled as something stirred on the ridge. A cat had appeared there, outlined against the moon. She recognized the broad head and tufted ears, and the tail with its bushy tip; even though the shape was black against the light, she knew the colors of its pelt: white with brown, black, and ginger blotches.

"Sol!" she hissed.

The outlined shape arched its back, then reared up on its hind paws, its forepaws stretched out as if it was about to rake its claws across the sky. It leaped upward, and as it leaped it swelled until it was so huge that it blotted out the moon and the blazing stars. Hollyleaf crouched, shivering, in darkness thicker than the deepest places of the forest.

Screeches of alarm rose up around her, a whole Clan of hidden cats wailing their fear of the shadow cutting them off from the protective gaze of StarClan. Above the noise, a single voice rang out: "Hollyleaf! Hollyleaf! Come out!"

Hollyleaf thrashed in terror and found her paws tangled in soft moss and bracken. Pale gray light was filtering through the branches of the warriors' den. A couple of foxlengths away, Hazeltail was scrambling out of her nest, shaking scraps of moss from her pelt.

"Hollyleaf!" The call came again, and this time Hollyleaf recognized Birchfall's voice, meowing irritably outside the den. "Are you going to sleep all day? We're supposed to be hunting."

"Coming."Groggy with sleep, every hair on her pelt still quivering from her nightmare, Hollyleaf headed toward the nearest gap between the branches. Before she reached it, her paws stumbled over the haunches of a sleeping cat, half hidden under the bracken.

Cloudtail's head popped up. "Great StarClan!" he grumbled. "Can't a cat get any sleep around here?"

"S-sorry," Hollyleaf stammered, remembering that Cloudtail had been out on a late patrol the night before; she had seen him return to camp with Dustpelt and Sorreltail while she was keeping her warrior's vigil.

Just my luck. My first day, and I manage to annoy one of the senior warriors!

Cloudtail snorted and curled up again, his blue eyes closing as he buried his nose in his fur.

"It's okay," Hazeltail murmured, brushing her muzzle against Hollyleaf's shoulder. "Cloudtail's mew is worse than his scratch. And don't let Birchfall ruffle your fur. He's bossy with the new warriors, but you'll soon get used to it."

Hollyleaf nodded gratefully, though she didn't tell Hazeltail the real reason she was thrown off balance. Birchfall didn't bother her; it was the memory of the dream that throbbed through her from ears to tail-tip, making her paws clumsy and her thoughts troubled.

Her gaze drifted to the nest where her brother Lionpaw—no, Lionblaze now—had curled up at the end of his vigil. She wanted to talk to him more than anything. But the nest was empty; Lionblaze must have gone out on the dawn patrol.

Careful where she put her paws, Hollyleaf pushed her way out of the den behind Hazeltail. Outside, Birchfall was scraping the ground impatiently.

"At last!" he snapped. "What kept you?"

"Take it easy, Birchfall." Brambleclaw, the ThunderClan deputy and Hollyleaf's father, was sitting a tail-length away with his tail wrapped neatly around his paws. His amber eyes were calm. "The prey won't run away."

"Not till they see us, anyway," Sandstorm added as she bounded across from the fresh-kill pile.

"If there is any prey." Birchfall lashed his tail. "Ever since the battle, fresh-kill's been much harder to find."

Hollyleaf's grumbling belly told her that Birchfall was right. Several sunrises ago all four Clans had battled in ThunderClan territory; their screeching and trampling had frightened off all the prey, or driven them deep underground.

"Maybe the prey will start to come back now," she suggested.

"Maybe," Brambleclaw agreed. "We'll head toward the ShadowClan border. There wasn't as much fighting over there."

Hollyleaf stiffened at the mention of ShadowClan. Will I see Sol again? she wondered.

"I wonder if we'll see any ShadowClan cats," Birchfall meowed, echoing her thought. "I'd like to know if they're all going to turn their back on StarClan, and follow that weirdo loner instead."

Hollyleaf felt as if stones were dragging in her belly, weighing her down. ShadowClan had not appeared at the last Gathering, two nights before. Instead, their leader Blackstar had come alone except for Sol, the loner who had recently arrived by the lake, and explained that his cats no longer believed in the power of their warrior ancestors.

But that can't be right! How can a Clan survive without StarClan? Without the warrior code?

"Sol's not such a weirdo," Hazeltail pointed out to Birchfall with a flick of her ears. "He predicted that the sun would vanish, and it did. None of the medicine cats knew that was going to happen."

Birchfall shrugged. "The sun came back, didn't it? It's not that big a deal."

"In any case," Brambleclaw interrupted, rising to his paws, "this is a hunting patrol. We're not going to pay a friendly visit to ShadowClan."

"But they fought beside us," Birchfall objected. "WindClan and RiverClan would have turned us into crow-food without the ShadowClan warriors. We can't be enemies again so soon, can we?"

"Not enemies," Sandstorm corrected. "But they're still a different Clan. Besides, I'm not sure we can be friends with cats who reject StarClan."

What about our own cats, then? Hollyleaf didn't dare to ask the question out loud. Cloudtail has never believed in StarClan. But she knew without question Cloudtail was a loyal warrior who would die for any of his Clanmates.

Brambleclaw said nothing, just gave his pelt a shake and kinked his tail to beckon the rest of the patrol. As they headed toward the thorn tunnel they met Brackenfur pushing his way into the hollow with Sorreltail and Lionblaze behind him. The dawn patrol had returned. As all three cats headed for the fresh-kill pile, Hollyleaf darted across and intercepted her brother.

    ECLIPSE ROCKS! =^.^=

Recently, I've read the book Warriors, Eclipse. It was the best book in the series, especially sice i love cats and battling. The only problem is that you have to read the other books in the series to get a good picture. The three main characters; Jaypaw, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw; are part of a prophesy that says "There willl be three, kin of your kin, that hold the power of the stars in their paws." Jaypaw is a blind, dark gray, cat that can see into other cats thoughts, memories, and dreams. Lionpaw is a golden tabby that can beat any enemy or win any battle without getting hurt. Hollypaw is a dark she-cat that is very attached to the warrior code. A strange cat named Sol tells Jaypaw and his mentor, Leafpool, that the sun will die, but it will come back to life. Later on in the book, there is a battle with every clan. WindClan starts a battle with ThunderClan with RiverClan as their allies. ThunderClan calls in ShadowClan to help them with the battle. In the middle of the battle, the sun disappears just like Sol said it would. Luckily, that ends the battle. At the next gathering, ShadowClan announces that they do not believe in Starclan (heaven) and will not attend any more gatherings. In the last few pages, Lionpaw and Hollypaw become wariors. Lionpaw becomes Lionblaze and Hollypaw is now called Hollyleaf. There are many positives to this novel, such as how addictive the authors made it. I couldn't put it down! I finished it in three or four days! When you read it, you enter a whole new world as a cat. You feel like you can smell and hear as well as they do. You feel like you're in the battles and the camp and the forest around the lake. Another positive is that instead of one main character, there are three. You get to be all three of them, see Hollypaw, Lionpaw, and Jaypaw's point of view. If you love cats like I do, you'll love this book. Every character is a cat. Also, if you love adventures, these three apprentices go on many of them. They sneak out of camp, enter other cats territory, and keep major secrets from each other, secrets that no other cat can even begin to imagine! They have countless battles, including one with every clan around the lake. There are several negatives to this book, such as you need to read the whole book to get a good idea of the plot. Since it's part of a series, there are many questions that don't get answered in that book. Its very hard to understand the warriors language, there are words like Twolegs, Thunderpaths, and even the names have a certain system to them. One unique thing about this novel is that there are three authors. They like to write mysteriously and like you're in a world you can never imagine. Of course, this book is fantasy. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes cats, battles, or adventures. If your mom's always telling you to read a book, this is a great one. You get buried in it and before you know it, you have to work to get the next one. Other related novels are, from the first series: Warriors, into the wild, Fire and Ice, Forest of Secrets, Rising Storm, A Dangerous Path, The Darkest Hour. From the new prophecy: Midnight, Moonrise, Dawn, Starlight, Twilight; and Sunset. From power of three: the sight, dark river, outcast, Eclipse, Long shadows, and Sunrise. This was one of the best books I've ever read.

    Greatest book ever!!!!!!!!

This book is awsome! I recomend it to everyone. Many reviews tell who they think the cat on the front cover is so, I will tell you who I think it is. In my opinion it is Sol for those of you who dont know he is a loner who comes to the clans in this book. The reason I think this is him is because in the begining of the book it tells the description of most of the cats and in Sol's description it says he has long ears, blue eyes, and he is gray, and in my opinion wise because he predictes an eclipse, BUT that DOES'NT mean that that I think the clans should abandon starclan, I think just the oposite because they are very, very wise and have told the clans about many things including firstars arrival, about brambleclaw killing hawkfrost which even brambleclaw would never have dreamed of in a million moons, and about lionblaze, hollyleaf, and jaypaw having special powers. I cant wait till the next book Long Shadows comes out becouse I think that many of our(as in all the Warrior fans)questions will be answered or more hints will be given to reach a conclusion. Way to go Warriors

More of the great Warriors series

My kids - an 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter both love these Erin Hunter books. From the original Warriors series to the current one they are reading- the Power of Three series they have read them all. They can't wait to get to her newest- Omen of the Stars series.

My daughter says they are adventurous, exciting and she can't wait to know what is going to happen next. She loves the characters, the settings, and just about everything about these series of books. She can't put them down and is begging me right now for the 4th Apprentice.

I really believe that any books that kids love to read, that leave them begging for more- must be great. Erin Hunter has done so much to increase the reading in my house- I hope she keeps writing for a long time.

    Dawnstar

The warrior series is a series unlike no other because of the twists and unexpected turns in the perspective of cats. Eclipse states that once again Erin Hunter has the power to change some ones opinion towards anything. I mean I'm more of a dog person than a cat person well until the day I picked up one of her books at my school that changed.

    I love warriors!

I love the warrior books! It only takes me about 1 to 3 days to read each book, that is how much I love the books! I am on the 3rd book in the power of the three series!
