Overview

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance escalates to an exciting conclusion in this trilogy clincher. As in Twilight and New Moon, Seattle is still wracked by mysterious killings and poor Bella is still split between her love for vampire Edward and her friendship with werewolf Jacob. Choices and new dangers loom. A convincing capstone for a reader favorite series.
Publishers Weekly

The legions of readers who are hooked on the romantic struggles of Bella and the vampire Edward will ecstatically devour this third installment of the story begun in Twilight, but it's unlikely to win over any newcomers. Jake, the werewolf met in New Moon, pursues Bella with renewed vigilance. However, when repercussions from an episode in Twilightplace Bella in the mortal danger that series fans have come to expect, Jake and Edward forge an uneasy alliance. The plot patterns have begun to show here, but Meyer's other strengths remain intact. The supernatural elements accentuate the ordinary human dramas of growing up. Jake and Edward's competition for Bella feels particularly authentic, especially in their apparent desire to best each other as much as to win Bella. Once again the author presents teenage love as an almost inhuman force: "[He] would have been my soul mate still," says Bella, "if his claim had not been overshadowed by something stronger, something so strong that it could not exist in a rational world." According to Meyer, the fourth book should tie up at least the Edward story, if not the whole shebang. Ages 12-up. (Aug.)

Gr 8 Up–Spanish readers will devour Meyer’s vampire love saga. When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. The language is fast paced, realistic, succinct, and easy to follow. The índice de vampiros in Amanacer, the final book in the series, allows readers to follow the history of the various vampire clans. The effective use of Latin-American Spanish will introduce readers who are fluent in Spanish to a series that has captivated America.–Eric Gómez, Broward County African-American Research Library, Fort Lauderdale, FL
Kirkus Reviews
It's the countdown to graduation and immortality for Bella, since the events of New Moon (2006) have convinced boyfriend Edward to let her join him in vampirism. While Bella desires only to leave this mortal coil, Edward wants her to try college and marriage first. Bella knows that becoming a vampire will forever sever her ties to best friend Jake, who's a werewolf and therefore an ancient racial enemy of all things vampiric. Luckily-and predictably-a gathering of bloodthirsty, vengeful vampires is headed straight for Bella. To protect her, the vegetarians of Edward's vamp coven need to stop trading racial epithets with the werewolves and work with them, instead. Bella wants the villains to be defeated so she can return to her everyday life of high school, anticipating immortality and fighting Edward's determination to avoid premarital sex. Unsettling racially charged characterizations are offset by messages of overcoming difference and working together. Fans of Bella's angst-drenched love triangle will gobble this entry up, and the open-ended conclusion paves the way for Jake's story to come. (Fantasy. YA)

Meet the Author

Stephenie Meyer
Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in English literature, and she lives with her husband and three young sons in Arizona. After the publication of her debut novel, Twilight, booksellers chose her as one of the "most promising new authors of 2005". (Publishers Weekly.) Look for Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse on audio from Listening Library.

Biography

According to Stephenie Meyer, the idea for her sensational debut novel, Twilight, came to her in a vividly detailed dream in 2003. Over the course of three months, writing at night when her children were in bed, the young Mormon mother of three developed that dream into the spellbinding story of 17-year-old Bella Swan, who moves from Phoenix, Arizona, to the tiny town of Forks, Washington, and falls in love with a beautiful, mysterious vampire named Edward Cullen. After feverish writing, painstaking editing, and a brief but frustrating round of queries, submissions, and rejections, Meyer finally connected with an editor at Little, Brown who fell in love with the manuscript and signed her to a three-book deal.

Twilight debuted in October, 2005. An immediate sensation, it appeared on several year-end best books lists and earned its author a rabid cult following among teenage girls. Since then, Meyer has continued Bella and Edward's story in bestselling sequels that have proved equally successful. Young readers cannot get enough of these riveting novels -- a captivating blend of vampires, romance, and suspense -- and parents rest easy knowing the books do not contain the graphic language and sexually provocative material that pervades some YA series.

Whether or not the Twilight Saga proves to have "Harry Potter legs" remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Meyer continues writing. She forayed into adult fiction with 2008's The Host, a chilling science fiction tale about the end of humanity, told from the perspective of an alien invader. And she makes it clear the door is open for further installments in her vampire romance. Clearly, this talented author has many more stories to tell.

Good To Know

Here are some fun facts from Stephenie's "unofficial" biography on her website:
"The unusual spelling of my name was a gift from my father, Stephen ( + ie = me ). Though I have had my name spelled wrong on pretty much everything my entire life long, I must admit that it makes it easier to google myself now."

" I met my husband, Pancho (his real name is Christiaan, but no one calls him that—it's not a long story, but it is a stupid one, so I'll skip it), when I was four, but we were never anywhere close to being childhood sweethearts. In fact, though we saw each other at least weekly through church activities, I can't recall a single instance when we so much as greeted each other with a friendly wave, let alone exchanged actual words.

This may have been for the best, because when we did eventually get around to exchanging words, sixteen years after our first meeting, it only took nine months from the first "hello" to the wedding."

" I am also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that has a huge influence on who I am and my perspective on the world, and therefore what I write (though I have been asked more than once, 'What's a nice Mormon girl like you doing writing about vampires?')."

"I can't write without music, and my biggest muse is the [British rock] band Muse."

A transcript of the dream that inspired Twilight appears in the book as Chapter 13, "Confessions."

    Two way love

Ithink this book was so romantic. The love between Edward and Balla is so pure. It wa kind of sad to see Bella be stuck in the situation where she has to choose between two guys. I think Bella should be with Edward but I stll want her to be friends with jacob.

    Amazing!

I have loved the Twilight series since the moment I read the first page. It just keeps getting better and better! This third one is my favorite! It answers so many questions, and leaves you waiting for the next book. I advise everyone to read this book! When I first read the summary I thought '...vampires?' But now I can't stop reading!

    Love it!!!!

Best book. So much romance and action you will cry. Victoria creates a vampire army to kill Bella. She belives it only fair to kill Bella in revenge of James, Victoria's mate who is dead because of Edward. The romance is a nonrenewable resource. Unable to be replaced or changed.

    Best book in the series...

Of all the brilliantly created Twilight books, Eclipse is, by far, my favorite. I can't really explain why, but the plot, the deepening of the characters, and the scenery really makes Eclipse stand out from the others.

The book starts out with a note from Jacob, telling Bella that he misses her. Not long after that, Bella becomes aware that the killings going on in Seattle are not human, but are caused by vampires. Edward soon realizes that the vampires are young ones, and must be part of some newly formed mob. It doesn't take long for all eyes to point to Victoria, a vampire from Twilight that seeks revenge on Bella, because Edward killed her mate.

The rest of the plot is based on the vampire killings and what the Cullen coven will do to stop it. There are also funny moments, like when *SPOILER ALERT* Jacob kisses Bella, and Bella punches him, thus breaking her hand. The love triangle grows more pronounced in this book than in New Moon, after Jacob confesses his love for Bella, and Edward's plan to marry strengthens.

All in all, a very satisfying read.
