Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Being green doesn't have to mean being ugly. This trilingual (English, French, and German) book introduces readers to the teeming full circle of new structures and products that embody eco-friendly design. Its 352 illustrated pages display the dazzling range of sustainable objects; from tiny gadgets to furniture to innovative energy alternatives. Mindful designs for professionals and the masses.

Michelle Marozik

Library Journal
The monosyllable green has taken on new meaning in the general population, to the credit of activists formerly known as natural resources conservationists, ecologists, and advocates of sustainability. This handsomely produced volume—essentially a product catalog—also addresses the role of the designers who produce utilitarian objects that, in their materials and manufacture, are environmentally friendly. Following a brief introduction that defines ecodesign, the first chapter outlines ten approaches to best practices, from minimizing polluting emissions to reducing the amount of material consumed. Concise introductions and pictorial surveys of products designed in accordance with the ten principles are laid out in eight sections: household appliances, furniture, light and energy, transportation, clothing and accessories, toys, packaging, and graphic design. In many cases, the trilingual description (English, German, French) does not fully explain the ecological nature of the product, as with Yves Béhar's Kada, a multifunctional stool/table that folds flat. VERDICT Alastair Fuad-Luke's ecoDESIGN: The Sourcebook is a more systematically assembled and more informative option. For large or comprehensive art and design collections only.—Paul Glassman, Felician Coll. Lib., Lodi, NJ
