The most comprehensive book ever published on the North American moose, this abundantly illustrated volume fully explains moose biology and ecology and assesses the increasingly complex enterprise of managing the species. Twenty-one wildlife biologists and researchers discuss moose taxonomy, reproduction and growth, feeding habits, behavior, population dynamics, relationships with predators, incidental mortality, and seasonal migration patterns. They analyze the effect of new strategies of moose habitat and harvest management - including the planting of late-winter cover, hunting regulations, and aerial and ground-level tracking methods. They also describe immobilization, handling, and translocation practices and discuss the future of moose management.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A scholarly yet very readable account of the North American moose, this fills a definite need; the last major work, Randolph L. Peterson's North American Moose Univ. of Toronto, was first published in 1955. Edited by present and past directors of Alaska's Moose Research Center, this volume consists of chapters written by 21 moose and wildlife experts. There are authoritative chapters on moose populations, reproduction, behavior, relationships with other species, mortality, habitat, feeding, nutrition, diseases, husbandry, and hunting. This book should appeal to anyone interested in wildlife management in general and moose in particular. Even the casual reader can spend enjoyable hours browsing through the hundreds of interesting photographs and drawings. Certain to be the standard moose bible for years to come, it is recommended especially for academic libraries because of its scholarly and comprehensive treatment.William H. Wiese, Iowa State Univ. Lib., Ames

"I would highly recommend that anyone interested in moose, no matter how small his or her interest may be, should pick up a copy of this book and peruse it. I guarantee that you'll end up reading the entire book."
—Charles J. Randall III, Western North American Naturalist

"This massive book about the largest deer in the world is an impressive undertaking. . . . The editors' stated goals were that the book be readable and interesting, and they have succeeded with these expectations--it is fascinating."
Booklist (starred review)

"The best documented book on Alces alces. All aspects of its biology and ecology are discussed in a very comprehensive manner."
