Volume 1, on theory, contains discussions of the foundations of conflict; defense, offense, and deterrence; rent seeking, conflict, and contests; appropriation and banditry; terrorism; civil wars, insurrections, and rebellions; and conflict resolution. Volume 2, devoted to applications, groups articles in sections on economic impacts; arms races, trade, and control; sanctions; peace and democracy; peacekeeping; and terrorism. The third volume contains case studies grouped in sections on world wars, Vietnam, northern Ireland, the Gulf War, the Middle East, civil wars, and war fighting.
