Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
This well-organized book is packed with attractive pictures and important information about ecstasy, including its discovery in a German lab in 1912, its illicit manufacturing today, and the dangers of using it. Every few pages, the book offers a "Searching Question," such as "Can you think of anything that you are dependent on? What about your friends or family members?" The reading level is slightly above eighth grade, but the book is designed to appeal to students in middle school, with an abundance of photographs and other illustrations, as well as short sections of only one or two pages each on a variety of topics. The in-depth information that high school students might need for a report would have to be supplemented by other sources. The pictures show an almost equal number of males and females, but decidedly more whites than people of color. In addition to information about the use of ecstasy in the United States, there is also information about the United Kingdom, some other European countries and Australia. The main text is supplemented with a glossary and reading lists for both print and web-based resources. This is part of a series called "Straight Talking." Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
