Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michelina P. Bonanno
This book might serve as a resource for middle school and junior high students who are in the initial stages of research about illegal designer drugs and addiction. It is the second volume in the "Drug Fact" series (other titles in this series include: Alcohol, Inhalants, Marijuana and Steroids), and it offers the reader limited insights into the manufacturing, selling and use of designer drugs by school age youth. The illustrations are trendy, the glossary definitions are bold faced and easy to understand, and the authors provide references to books and websites for further readings. However, addiction is loosely defined to include accidental overdose, and allusions to cocaine and heroine are given with no previous context to relate them to. The social context of the use of the drug Ecstasy is presented as the "rave" drug without any definition of what a rave is, and the authors provide a dubious departure from their factual tone when explain that "Using Ecstasy messes up the balance of these chemicals..." in their discussion of the effects of Ecstasy on neurotransmitters! Overall, this book delivers information about the illegal use of Ecstasy in a way that is counterintuitive to the topic at hand. Facts and details about the use of designer drugs are discussed in isolation. The enormous social costs of Ecstasy use—associated health care costs, wasted talent and lives, devastated families and, of course, drug-related crime—go unmentioned. Reviewer: Michelina P. Bonanno, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-7–Presenting the “history, effects, and dangers” of these drugs is not easy, yet these authors do just that in compact and concise packages. Salient and interesting points of history are noted, such as sidebar information about Carry Nation, who strong-armed bars by wielding an axe against their stock (Alcohol), or the fact that the colony of Virginia required farmers to grow hemp (Marijuana). Smooth transitions bring readers up-to-date with present laws. Each book provides clear explanations about effects, followed by diagrams of the body to clarify the specific organs/body systems that suffer the most damage. The presentations are straightforward, especially in the acknowledgment that because of peer pressure, the decision to try drugs is often made without knowing all about the possible consequences. This series provides an excellent starting point for remedying that problem.
