I've been traveling around Ecuador for almost six weeks now, and Lonely Planet has become my bible. Every part of the country I've even considered visiting is covered in fairly complete detail. The maps are very helpful, and any recommendation for hotels or restaurants I have taken from the book has not disappointed. However, don't rely solely on any travel guide; absolutely nothing can replace spending a few minutes chatting with the locals for ideas or recommendations. The only problem I have with this book is that it hasn't been updated since 2001. It doesn't seem like a long time, but Ecuador's economy has been going through radical changes in the time since, so prices quoted in the book are rarely accurate. Information on the city of Baños is particularly irrelevant as the city was almost completely evacuated due to a volcano for a few years prior to the publishing of the book, but now it has completely rebounded to its former state. Otherwise I have no complaints and would highly recommend this guide.
