Children's Literature - Phyllis KennemerAlpha Betty’s class has twenty-six students, one for each letter of the alphabet. This book about Eddie is all about words that begin with the letter “e”. Eddie Elephant is a good storyteller. His stories feature elephant emperors, elephant explorers, fearless elephants, and enchanted elephants. Every day after school Eddie helps his neighbors, Elmer and Ernestine Emu. He helps in the garden planting seeds and pulling weeds. Then Ernestine lays an egg and Elmer assigns Eddie the task of watching over the egg and keeping it warm. Eddie lies in the nest and wraps the egg in his trunk. Then he tells it stories. When Emma Lou Emu cracks through the shell, she comes out an excellent storyteller. The charming animal characters add humor to the story. They appear on mostly white pages with minimum backgrounds in color. The last page includes facts about elephants, exercises for the letter “e” and a reading activity. Young children will enjoy the alliteration in the text and the amusing illustrations. Part of the “Animal Antics A to Z” series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.; Ages 4 to 6.
