Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This graphic novel–style companion to Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness contains four condensed versions of classic Poe stories. Grimly's caricatured faces capture the macabre soul of Poe's work, while the text incorporates significant moments from the original works. When the speaker in The Tell-Tale Heart declares, “I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever,” he is rendered ghoulishly, as three panels close in on his own bulging, horror-struck eye. The essence of Poe with the accessibility and artistry of Grimly's gruesome images make it a sound introduction to the legendary writer—though, as with much of Poe's work, this collection is not for the timid. Ages 11–up. (Aug.)
Children's Literature
Four of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous short stories are reawakened through Gris Grimly's ghastly illustrations. The "Tell-Tale Heart" is quite creepily narrated through darkly hued haunting images. The tales are illustrated in an almost comic-book fashion, and Poe's antiquated, nineteenth century language is much more comprehensible when accompanied by Grimly's graphics. The countenance of Poe's murderer becomes less sane with each passing page. In keeping with the manuscript's theme, the next Poe tale is "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether," a story in which a curious young man voluntarily visits a French mental institution, only to discover that the asylum is being run by its very charges. Even the typeface is fascinating in this collection of stories: the font varies according to perspective. The third story, "The Oblong Box," takes place predominantly aboard a ship destined for New York City. The narrator's artist friend, Mr. Wyatt, brings aboard a mysterious rectangular box, for which the story is named. Poe aficionados are undoubtedly aware of the box's morose contents, and others can surely presume. The final story is "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." A tale of hypnosis even though death, it is a final reminder of Poe's macabre literary legacy. Reviewer: Jennifer Keeney
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Four of Poe's morbid short stories are adapted for teens in this heavily illustrated presentation: "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether," "The Oblong Box," and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." Grimly intersperses his horror-infused ink-and-watercolor cartoon art throughout Poe's putrid prose. The effect is an offering that bridges graphic and traditional print formats. Great for readers who adore the gothic and the gruesome.—Richelle Roth, Boone County Public Library, KY
