    Amazing & Inspirational

    In Sandi Patty's The Edge of the Divine - where possibility meets God's faithfulness, I found an amazing and inspirational book. As you share Sandi's journey about her weight loss and its impact on her celebrated career in music and more importantly on her family, she entwines this moving path of exploration with particular and relevant passages from the Bible. Seemingly simple words but ones that spoke to her and encouraged her to carry on even at her lowest moments. The "edges" that Sandi takes are those difficult times that she needs to make a decision; a decision that she knows will make a significant impact on her life but is hesitant to take it. But because of her amazing faith she takes that step off the cliff edge. This book is funny, moving and insightful. Much of what Sandi wrote felt at times that she was writing about me! I've never used so many sticky tags on a book to remind me of sentences that spoke to me, made me think, made me smile or even, yes...bring tears to my eyes. What I liked was the reassurance I felt - Sandi will be the first to admit her faith wavers sometimes, but the beauty of faith in God is that He knows you'll waver, but will still welcome you, still love you. It really doesn't matter what faith you are or if you're a non-believer, what I'm sure you will take away with you is that someone's faith in not only their God, but their family is simply wonderful and reassuring.     The Edge of Divine: Where Possibility Meets God's Faithfulness by Sandi Patty

    The Edge of Divine: Where Possibility Meets God's Faithfulness is an autobiographical account of Sandi Patty's recent 80+ pound weight loss is a true inspiration for anyone seeking to make a change in his or her life. In her book Sandi chronicles her journey of choices and changes in her quest to be around for her family for many years to come. Sandi's success in weight loss is attributed to her choice to have lap band surgery along with relying on God's help in making permanent lifestyle changes.

    In 2009, Sandi, a member of Women of Faith"s Porch Pals, made a promise to her Porch Pals and audience that in the next year she would follow the example of Luci Swindoll, fellow Porch Pal, and lose weight. I was so moved by her impassioned pledge that I made the same pledge to myself. At one point in my life, like Sandi, I considered gastric bypass surgery. However, unlike Sandi, I chickened out. Reading about and seeing Sandi's success in weight loss is truly inspirational. Sandi's reliance on God's unwavering love and his desire to help us succeed in our commitments to change our lives is a blueprint for anyone facing the long, arduous journey away from an addiction whether it is food or something else.

    The Edge of the Divine

    Sandi opens the book with her account of going through a visit to the bariatric surgeon's office and you think the whole book is going to be on that topic. Thankfully, it's not! When I chose the book by it's title, I had hoped for something more spiritual and got it. She defines the word edge as "the point at which something is likely to happen", and she uses that word to explain many life experiences where she has made decisions that have brought her closer to God. She shares her life, her God, her faithfulness, her fears, her family; all as if you were a old friend and catching up with her in her living room for an extended weekend. Other than her public "star" power, Sandi's life is not much different than ours; she has the divorce, kids, new husband, depression, weight problems, etc., just like the rest of us. Sandi does have a lot to share biblically and I will probably refer back to the book for some of those scriptures. There are also Questions for Discussion and Individual Reflection at the end of the book that are very good. The book was a very quick read - I read it in an afternoon. Very enjoyable.

    An Inspirational Book!

    I've enjoyed Sandi Patty's music since I was a teenager. I've always loved listening to her sing ~ she has such a wonderful voice so when I was offered a chance by Thomas Nelson Publishing to review The Edge of the Divine, I was pretty excited!


    In Sandy's open, up front and humorous style she talks about the Edge of the Divine. She opens her book by defining that phrase as "the point at which something is likely to happen." A point when that "something" becomes a pivotal event in our lives.


    An event that is life changing and depending on our choices, can either lead us to walk closer to God or away from God.


    She explores within her book how this "edge of the divine" is often overlooked. She shows us how to recognize these life changing moments and encourages us to make the choices to grow and hold fast to God's promises and blessings as we journey in with Him.


    Through out the book I was impressed by her sense of humor, her honesty. She shared clear examples of her life when she was walking the edge of the divine and how her choices, both good and bad impacted on her life and her walk with God.


    I walked away from reading this book feeling uplifted and renewed. It is an inspirational book full of joy, humor and faith.

    The Edge of the Divine

    The Edge of the Divine, is Sandi Patty's story of the journey that she began in 2008, when she began her research and her ultimate choice to have lap band surgery. Not just the physical journey, but Sandi also shares her emotional and spiritual journey that she has been on since her story began. A journey in which she learned to recognize the many edges in her life. An edge is the point at which something is likely to begin. As Sandi tells her story, in her own words she shares many of those new beginnings, edges that she came to and through.
    She is very candid about the fact that though she said God was her number one priority, in her life, her choices were plainly shown that food was her "comforter-in-chief. She is very open and candidly speaks of her past, of the struggles and the hurts in her life that brought her to the point of her life where she knew this edge would be the toughest to face.
    I truly enjoyed Sandi's book and look forward to referencing back to it, as there were many spiritual and emotional truths that all of us must face. As an overweight person myself it truly made me think about the things that trigger why I eat, and what food is to me. Most definitely a book for all people to read, even those who do not struggle with weight issues, but perhaps are beset with other weights in their lives. 214 pages 5 stars.

    Powerful, Inspiring Book

    One definition of an edge is "the point at which something is likely to happen"....so begins Sandi's powerful book about her weight loss struggles, her faith, her family and her life. Sometimes brutally honest, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always uplifting, joyful, emotional and hard-hitting. She delves into her lifelong struggles with weight loss, her decision (years in the making) to have lap-band surgery and the resulting "revelations" that come into her life as a result.

    Her book leans heavily on her faith as a Christian, but isn't "preachy"....just full of her belief in God and all that we can accomplish through Him.

    She gives us a glimpse into her childhood, her marriages, her children and her life as the top performing (and award-winning) Christian singer in today's realm of Christian music. Her struggles have not been in vain, for I feel she has reached a level of contentment in her life, that few of us have obtained. But she gives great insight into how we can ALL reach this same level but believing in ourselves and in God's plan for us. Sandi manages to reveal some of her life's toughest moments and relates the stories and end results (mostly happy ones)....in a way that causes you to feel that you've known her forever and gone through those tough times with her.

    A VERY gripping book, one that you will be glad you read. One from which you will gain some measure of insight into your own life, whether it be your own struggles with weight/health issues, marriage, children or your career. A book that I read in one sitting! I simply could not put it down! Do yourself a favor and pick this wonderful book up as soon as you can. You won't regret it!

    Edge of the Divine

    Based on the cover of the book, it appeared that this book was about weight loss surgery and the impact it had on Sandi Patty's life. However, when delving into the pages, the writer talks more about an "edge" a point at which something is likely to happen. Sandi takes you though the many edges in her life, most being traumatic experiences in which she was able to fall off the edge and receive God's grace. The majority of the book focused on her "edge" experiences and little on her weight loss surgery. At times, it seemed that she was musing over the tough times in her life, events which readers may already know about if they have read her previous books. While many people have weight loss surgery, it was difficult to tie that event biblically to the intervention of Christ in her life through a man-made solution to obesity. If you are looking for a journey through bariatric surgery, this book does not provide that level of detail. Nevertheless, if you want to know more about Sandi's life, her challenges and her faith, it's a good read. Thomas Nelson provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for me to read and review.     "A dictionary defines the word edge in several ways, but my favorite is "the point at which something is likely to begin.I've learned that, throughout each day, we encounter points at which something is likely to begin. Edges."

    "The Edge of the Divine" is about, as the title hints, edges. Sandi Patty, through her weight-loss journey has come across edge upon edge in her life. This book is about what lead up to her decision to undergo Lap Band surgery and her life since. She talks about the times when she had no idea what God was doing but trusted Him anyway. "God by His providence brings you into circumstances that you can't understand at all, but the Spirit of God understands. God brings you to places, among people, and into certain conditions to accomplish a definite purpose through the intercession of the Spirit in you."

    One line from the book that stood out to me is this: "That's my God. That's my Jesus. He doesn't mind getting rained on or mud-splattered. He's right there in the storm with us." She talks about how Jesus doesn't wait on us to get everything together before being there for us. When we go through rough times, He's right there with us.not afraid to get a little dirty. In life we have two options when coming upon an edge. Sandi talks about Humpty Dumpty and what might've happened if he fell on the other side of the wall. "We teeter on that edge, looking on either side of the wall. Neither landing site looks comfortable; there are rocks and sharp points to be endured. But sometimes, if you look a little farther in this imaginary scene, you can make a better choice by checking out the first responders to pick up the pieces." She talks about the importance of friends who will support you during hard times and gives her own firsthand experience with her divorce and the situation surrounding her second marriage.

    This was a good read and good message. Another line that jumped out at me was, "we keep trying, keep moving in the right direction, knowing that our journey isn't about a stopwatch but about a compass." Life is full of edges and moments when life might get a little messy. I love how each chapter begins with a scripture. My favorite was 2 Corinthians 12:7: "my grace is enough; it's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness."

    Book Review: "The Edge of the Divine" by Sandi Patty

    An edge symbolizes the end or beginning of something. The time and space between two edges could have been cruel, traumatic, betraying and filled with the urgent need to reach the end. When we think it's all over, God meets us with His faithfulness and presents us with possibilities.

    Sandi Patti, in her book, " The Edge of the Divine" discovers how God can meet us right on the edge and transform it into something new, just because He is faithful.

    She shares about her struggle with her uncontrolled fondness for food which led her to being overweight and complicated the way she thought about herself. She also reveals a dark secret that traumatized her and led her to look for comfort in food. A humbling experience with John 8 leads her to discover that God gives us a second chance and Sandi crosses over the edge to experience life abundantly in God.

    A walk from the edge onto a never-ending pasture of possibilities was a challenge . But she doesn't fail to mention about her family and friends who inspired her to be all that God wanted her to be.Sandi wore different hats - Award winning vocalist and speaker, wife, mom to 7 children, friend, daughter-in-law and it is deeply encouraging to know how she strove and sought God's help to fulfill each of these roles in the best way.

    Being a woman, i could relate to every page of her book. It was interesting to note that success did not come easily to Sandi's singing career.All her dreams amounted to nothing when she faced a rejection. But she goes on to tell the readers the soulful message of how God can turn something that Sandi thought was "pretty boring" into who she is today! The journey from being a little girl with a record player to a Grammy award winning vocalist, in Sandi's words is " Hard choices, Soft Landings".

    Simple, practical yet direct...every woman can find some encouragement from Sandi's personal experiences.

    Encouraging

    Sandi Patty shares her struggle with weight, and the choices she faced regarding her health. She reveals how even as she lost 80 pounds, she still needed to heal emotional wounds before she could become truly healthy. Sandi also describes the way in which her faith gave her the courage to confront scars from her past. She also share the stories of others who stepped out in faith at crossroads in their lives.

    The conversational tone of this book is highly readable, but I found myself wanting more. Still, I would recommend this book to new Christians, particularly women, as well as anyone who needs an encouraging word.

    The Edge of the Divine

    Okay, I finished this book by Sandi Patty earlier this week but I have been putting off writing the review. I really don't like writing bad reviews. The book is a quick read and somewhat inspirational but truthfully I really expected more. Unless you struggle with weight issues I feel you won't get very much out of this book. It read more like her diary or journal about her personal struggles with lap-band surgery. There are some illustrations from others that she used to make the point of God's faithfulness to us but they were far and few between.

    That Sandi Patty Book

    I was a little surprised by the subject of this book. I guess I don't follow the news closely enough. I did know that Sandi battled her weight just like me. I didn't know Sandi had a lap-band procedure done.

    My friend just had one and so I can understand and sympathize with what Sandi had to go through. I would have liked more information on how she coped with the restrictive eating after the surgery. I want to give this book to my friend and it was somewhat useful but could have been so much more useful.

    I still am not clear on why people can use self-control after the surgery and not before.

    The book is a friendly read. That is, I read it easily in one night. The topic is right up my alley. I am always watching my weight too.

    It does stray a little from the original topic into how happy her life is now and how God is meeting her needs in other ways. I again, would have liked more information on how He is also meeting her food needs.

    I liked the book but I really again would have like more info on the whole topic of weight struggle, and our different ways of attacking it.
