Edged Blade: Colbana Files, J.C. Daniels
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Fantasy/Sci-fi, Romance
I love this series, but felt the last book didn’t quite live up to my expectations. Kit was still healing and keeping Damon at arms length, and I missed their connection, even though I understood why she was like this. She’d gone through an incredibly traumatic time, and its not something to snap out of quickly – for some people they'd never get past it but Kit has a serious underlying strength, and I was convinced she would recover – or at least find herself anew. Things are looking up now for her and Damon, they’ve got closer though he’s still holding himself back, treating her cautiously but its reached the point where she’s ready for more – she just needs to convince him she’s ready, that she won’t break. Hurrah – I so love them as a couple.
Justin – he’s a good friend to her, former lover and still has feelings so it’s understandable that he’s not best buds with Damon. He’s got a job on and needs Kit’s help. They team up and once again are plunged into danger, with the job covering not just witches disappearing, but others right across the supernatural types. Its a serious problem, but getting information from the different groups is hard, they're not known for sharing info. They need to this time though, and as the bodies start to stack up, the dangers grow closer and there are some real surprises in store. Once again Kit is in the position of working for and with Supernaturals, while not belonging to any particular group. Damon had made her part of the cat clan but she’s not a cat, so can’t take part in everything. There’s an old lover of Damon’s too on the scene, she left the pack after differences with the old Alpha and now Damon is back she makes it clear she’s keen to get close to him again, and sneers at Kit reminding her she isn’t a cat and thus a true part of the clan. I love that kind of conflict and it gave a solid and interesting slant to the story.
Once again magic plays a strong part, with secrets coming out slowly, but as more is revealed its clear the problem is huge, and has been going on far longer than was first thought. To me Kit’s the perfect person to get involved, she’s worked with and for most of the different supernatural groups, and has a measure of trust from them so is able to obtain info they wouldn’t necessarily share with a different group. There’s more too for us as readers to learn about this world. Kit’s is still without her magic that connected her to her sword and to other weapons, where they “sang” to her and responded to her on an internal level, after the horrific experiences with vampire Jude, but it seems to me that maybe – just maybe – time may help heal that too. I hope so because its an integral part of who she is and adds to her special qualities.
Its clear at the end of this book that thought the initial problem is resolved, its a part of something far wider and greater than expected, and its going to continue in future books, bringing in some very important and unexpected characters. I loved this one – a real five star read and one for the keepers file.
Stars: Five, a gripping read, solid story and it was great to be back with Kit, Damon and Co. I just wish it wasn’t so long between books....

Edged Blade is the only the second book I have read in the Colbana Files series. The other book I have read was Bladed Magic ,a novella. It gave me a nice taste of this series but wow Edged Blade increased my appetite and I can't wait to read more of this great series.
Kit Colbana is my kind of gal. This girl can get just about anything done and kick the bad guy or gal's rear end while she is solving the problem. If I was in a dangerous situation this is one woman I would want on my side and I sure wouldn't want to make her mad. If you can not tell I quickly grew fond of Kit and admired her for what all she has been through and all the issues she has been able to overcome.
Damon has been patient and supportive of Kit while she takes her time to heal and recover from the horrible events that happened. I haven't read the whole series so I don't know all the details but Kit was through some very traumatic events in the last year. How could I not love the fact that Damon has been patiently waiting for Kit to give the go ahead to resume their relationship. While he's waiting he is also watchful of Kit to try to take care of her as well. He has some very powerful people under him that try to know what Kit is up to in order to be of help. Kit doesn't always want or need the assistance but when she does Damon and his crew are there ready and willing to kick butt and ask questions later.
Justin is Kit's best friend and former lover. These two have a very deep and close friendship and would do anything to help the other. They also work together a lot to solve mysteries of NH world. In Edged Blade there is some really bad things happening and people missing. They set out to find out what's going on, why, and who is responsible. I don't want to tell you too much because you are going to want to read this great story to see what happens for yourself.
There is a LOT of drama, suspense, some sweet romance along with some steam, a strong sense of friendship and a few frenemy relationships that are interesting to watch. Overall this is one really great story that I could not put down. About the time I thought I knew what was going to happen next J.C. Daniels would throw another twist into the situation and I was once again spellbound.
I have read this talented authors work in other genres and I always love her work. She is quite talented and I should not be surprised by her unbelievable talent anymore, but I am! This talented lady has a way with creating interesting characters that are very complex. The story lines she writes are so dramatic, and full of suspense with so many twist and turns that I can not help but want to keep reading to see what is going too happen on the next page, then the next, and well the next. You know the story, just one more page that turns into half a book later.
If you have read the other the books in the Colbana files then you are gong to want to grab this book now! If you haven't read the other books but enjoy a great Urban Fantasy story, pick up one of these books. I haven't read the whole series and I am missing a few things but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of the story. I would love to read the rest of the series but I didn't have any problem reading this as a stand alone book.
I can not wait to see what happens in the next book. I know there is more to this story and of course I'm sure there is more to happen. Ms. Daniels is so creative I'm sure Kit is in for more adventure.
I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Edged Blade.

It’s been almost a year since Kit was kidnapped and tortured at the hands of a vampire, and life could almost be normal again, apart from the nightmares. Not only is she dying to get her hands all over her favourite cat alpha boyfriend, being in a room of vampires doesn’t quite make her sweat and run away panicked. When her best-friend Justin brings her case where not only witches, but shifters and even vampires are disappearing, she takes the case up with a sense that this is bigger than it first appears.
You know what I hate? Cliff hangers that aren’t quite cliff hangers and having to wait for the next book to see the end of a conversation. Damn J.C. Daniels wily ways, I am now guaranteed to read the next book in the series! Despite the not-quite cliff hanger, I still would have read the next book as although Edges Blade perhaps hasn’t been my favourite book in the series, it still had my hand surgically attached to my kindle.
In Edged Blade Kit has healed some from her experiences with Jude – the evil torturing vampire – and is trying to move on and get back to her old self, with various amounts of success. The success I enjoyed the most was the sexy times with Damon, Alpha of the cat shifters and Kit’s boyfriend. Their time together managed to sweet and healing, whilst being banging-against-the-wall sexy. I also liked seeing Kit slowly returning back to her kick ass self, smart mouthed self and taking on a new case.
The case was interesting and kept the story moving on at a fairly clipped pace, this wasn’t a balls to the wall, no time for a quick breath kind of book, but it kept me interested and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. In fact this book seemed too short, before I knew it, I had finished it still eagerly anticipating more.
I really enjoyed Edged Blade if you haven’t picked this series up, than you need to give it a go, it has everything you need from action to romance, and it always leaves you wanting more.

This book is utterly fantastic! I love Kit and Damon and Doyle and Justin. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book and once I started it I couldn’t put it down. I laughed, I cried, I screamed and sometimes my heart raced. I wanna be badass like Kit and I want my own Damon.
This series is a must and you must start at the beginning to get every twist and turn and it is completely worth it, go get them all!

In the year since her life was torn apart, Kit Colbana has slowly rebuilt herself. There’s a promise of hope in the relationship with the alpha of the local shapeshifters and she no longer comes screaming into wakefulness. Life’s not perfect but then again, when was it ever?
When her best friend Justin comes to her for help, there’s little question as to what her answer will be. Witches are disappearing and Justin won’t rest until he has answers. Soon, they learn that it’s not just witches who’ve gone missing, but vampires and shifters, too.
Unlikely alliances are forged as Kit and Justin found themselves drawn into a twisted web of lies and betrayal. As the clock counts down and the culprit behind recent disappearances is revealed, those Kit loves the most become the target of somebody who will kill to protect an ugly secret.
Late June of 2012 my first encounter with Kit in Blade Song (Colbana Files #1) piqued my interest in learning more about her sassy character so when got the chance in 2013 to read book 2 Night Blade (Colbana Files #2) grabbed on to it and was stunned at how much it emotionally impacted me as it wound to a close.
Book 3, Broken Blade (Colbana Files #3) however changed the game even further as it is when Kit solidly won me over to her corner by showing the solid core of inner strength that I admire in a make believe character just as much as do in a real life person.
Book 4, Edged Blade (Colbana Files, #4) changed the game again as Kit slowly emerges from the darkness to shine almost as brightly as she did in the beginning. In some ways all the travails that she faced in her youth forged the steel in her spine and in her mind that somehow carried over helping her to begin to fully overcome the trauma that she suffered almost a year ago at the hands of someone she never expected to would brutalize her body and soul.
My hopes for Kit and Damon were realized, my hope for Kit to recover her sense of self is slowly throughout this book brought to realization and the direction that we are headed with the setup for book 5 is one that I heartily am on board with.
All in all the series has more than fulfilled my expectations with each new book and with each step of Kit's journey she earns her place once again as one of my favorite female leads in Urban Fantasy genre!
The bonus Novella Hunt Me published in 2011 and included after this book was a nice sexy short read that was a welcome surprise, Drew and Dakota were very well matched physically as well as mentally.

Witches, vampires and shifters have gone missing and unlikely alliances are forged when Kit and Justin find themselves drawn into a twisted web of lies and betrayals and everyone Kit loves the most becomes the target of someone who will kill to keep to protect an ugly secret in this thrilling urban fantasy.
The reader can’t help but get drawn into the story as Kit is finally rebuilding her life after the events that nearly destroyed her a year ago and her relationship with Damon, the alpha of the local shapeshifters, while still a work in progress is growing steadily stronger. Their attraction still burns hot but Damon is still treating her like glass and Kit has had about had enough of that but it isn’t easy getting over nightmares. The fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on their toes with lots of suspense and excitement and the strong compelling characters grab the reader’s attention and invite them to join in the adventure.
Justin adds a little spice to Kit’s relationship issues as he still has feelings for her but all of that is put on hold as the danger escalates and tension builds as the help Justin asked for turns into a deadly race to stop the betrayals that lead to kidnappings, torture and death. There is never a dull moment as they investigate the missing NH’s (non humans) and the web becomes more and more complicated leading Kit and Justin to making some very unlikely alliances.
This fascinating series keeps getting better and better with lots of intriguing characters, interesting elements and a mysterious kick ass heroine that add her special brand of spice to the story and with that conclusion I have to say that the next book promises to be just as good or better than this one.
4 ½ STARS
