More About This Book

Overview

From the famous Vision Books series of lives of saints for young people, this is the inspiring dramatic account of the colorful and courageous life and death of the martyr, St. Edmund Campion, ``hero of God's underground" during the persecutions of the Catholics in England in the 1500s.

Campion, the most celebrated young scholar of his day, was on his way to becoming the Archbishop of Canterbury until a crisis of conscience turned him back to his Catholic faith. He fled England, became a Jesuit priest, and was sent back to be the leader of the underground ministry to the persecuted Catholics until, after a long and frustrated search, the government finally captured him and brutally executed him. His daring and brilliant underground ministry to Catholics all over England, his zeal for the faith, and his great courage and joy in the face of martyrdom are all related in this compelling story for youth.

    Use for Teaching

I ordered this book because it was an option for a student I tutor in the 8th grade of a homeschooling program. This book is simple enough for a student of that grade to learn to write a structured five paragraph paper of character analysis. However, for me, as a teacher, the text was not particularly fun to teach or inspiring, simply because there was very little to say about it-- the text is written in a very straightforward, simple manner and the narration style seems inconsistent, which sometimes makes it.... not difficult to read but perhaps annoying. Despite the lack of literary value of the text, the story provides opportunities to talk about moral questions, such as what is the value of suffering. This book, as can be determined by the publisher, has a strong Catholic support and is also rather anti-Protestant, given the period of history it is discussing. Overall, I would not choose to use such a text in my own curriculum, because I felt there are better written texts that provide provide the opportunity to consider similar ethical questions, but also allow for the reader to observe elements of high literary quality.
