Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
"Pride goeth before a fall." Edna, the cat, has the most beautiful tail in the world. She loves her tail and flaunts it before her friends. When asked to join her friends in welcoming the new cat into the neighborhood, Edna preens her tail with care. Fearing that she is being followed into the woods for the party, Edna becomes frightened. At last she catches the monster that is trailing her; it is her tail! Bechtold's humorous tale of a tail and the accompanying simple, but fun, illustrations allow children to see "the monster" before Edna realizes what it is. As the story progresses, the laughter of young children will reflect their immersion in the story, but the "twist" at the end will bring surprise to what could otherwise be a predictable story. This simple story of pride and true friendship will be a favorite with children. 2001, Houghton Mifflin, $15.00. Ages 4 to 7. Reviewer: J. B. Petty

K-Gr 2-Edna is a vain cat who is very proud of her beautiful white tail. She usually doesn't take to traipsing through the woods, but she's willing to go there to attend a party for a new cat in the neighborhood. She primps and fluffs and then starts off, but something seems to be following her. She runs faster and faster, followed by the culprit, until at last she turns around and catches it. Much to her surprise, it's her own tail (with branches and brambles that entwined themselves along the way). After meeting Ivan, a Manx cat, Edna learns that good friends are more important than appearances. The gouache illustrations perfectly capture the personalities of this feline cast of characters-not to mention Edna's fondness for pink-and will appeal to cat lovers everywhere.-Genevieve Ceraldi, New York Public Library Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
