Description: This book was developed from a think-tank conference of ethics consultants, a 24-member "Dreamcatchers" ethics-education working group. The editors orchestrated the writings of 24 contributing authors for this publication.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a resource for rehabilitation educators, i.e., physical and occupational therapists, in health and rehabilitation ethics. Physical therapy and occupational therapy educators can use this as a sourcebook for their educational programs in the area of ethics. In addition, it may be a valuable resource for faculty discussions on ethics-related topics.
Audience: The audience includes educators in physical therapy and occupational therapy programs. Although it is not designed for entry-level clinicians, it would be an asset in advanced physical therapy and occupational therapy courses in areas of ethics. The authors are contributors who are well recognized visible figures in the field. Many are recognized as fellows in their profession.
Features: The book's 27 chapters are grouped into three sections. Seven contributors provide the basis in the first section, Broadening Our Worldview of Ethics, by exploring basic ethics. The second section, Health Care Environment: Contextualizing Ethics, includes 10 chapters that explore beyond the professions' function. Various topics are covered, such as the moral role of physical therapists, the ephemeral ethics of evidence-based practice, and advances in medical technology. The third section, Transforming Ethics Education: Strategies for Student Learning, provides tools and ideas that serve as a resource for ethics educators.
Assessment: This is a valuable resource for healthcare educators. The book would benefit from end of chapter cases or examples or discussions on how to apply the information. However, it will enhance many courses related to professionalism, history of the profession, education, and ethics.
