Ce deuxieme volume d'Education et instruction en Chine traite de l'acquisition des connaissances sous des angles divers et a travers des specialisations. Que ce soit en tant que fonctionnaires confrontes a des problemes concrets, comme les questions hydrauliques et fiscales, ou en tant que savants se passionnant pour les mathematiques, la medecine, les sciences, leur culture classique et poetique n'a pas empeche les lettres chinois de se montrer curieux des choses concretes et d'etre competents dans des domaines varies. Ainsi, les connaissances techniques de certains fonctionnaires, acquises par d'autres voies que celle des examens, leur ont permis de faire tourner un systeme administratif d'une extreme complexite. Sous les Song, les academies eurent un role important dans la transmission du savoir mathematique ainsi que dans la reflexion sur les methodes d'enseignement et d'apprentissage. Durant l'ere Kangxi, l'empereur lui-meme manifeste un interet certain pour les mathematiques occidentales et c'est sous ses auspices qu'un enseignement des sciences est ouvert a la Cour imperiale. Sous les dynasties Ming et Qing, des lettres se sont interesses a la medecine et ont contribue a l'etablissement d'une nouvelle tradition medicale lettree qui a debouche sur un programme d'enseignement et favorise l'edition d'un nombre croissant de manuels. La description de la formation des forces navales chinoises sous la derniere dynastie offre l'exemple du mode d'acquisition de connaissances pratiques. Pour certains auteurs, en Chine, l'enseignement juridique n'aurait vraiment commence qu'avec l'apparition de societes de juristes et la creation d'ecoles de droit et d'administration a partir de 1905; en realite, les emprunts faits au droit occidental au tournant du XXe siecle ont ete etroitement associes a la reconversion d'une tradition juridique chinoise bien vivante, tant sur les plans theorique que pratique. A la meme epoque, l'influence japonaise s'est exercee dans les reformes juridiques chinoises au travers des nombreuses traductions d'ouvrages japonais et avec le recrutement de juristes japonias. Les acteurs de cette influence sont entre autres des etudiants chinois formes en droit et en sciences politiques au Japon; a leur retour, ils ont contribue a diffuser les conceptions occidentales du droit revisitees par les Japonais. En Chine meme, l'Universite de Pekin s'est tres tot ouverte a l'enseignement des sciences, critere essentiel de l'acces a la modernite; des sa creation pendant la reforme des Cent jours en 1898, cette universite a servi de cadre a une reflexion theorique sur la necessaire transformation de l'etude, aussi bien le systeme des connaissances que la methode de formation.
