Overview

Known collectively as the New Wales Trilogy, these three plays mark a drastic change in the way Wales is portrayed on the stage and on radio. In them, Thomas throws aside previous stereotypes and images, to produce dark and disturbing dramas of dislocation and miscommunication. External influences emerge: Jack Kerouac looms large over the passionate and explosive 'House of America', while a character from The Virginian is a crucial presence in 'East from the Gantry'. In 'Flowers of the Dead Red Sea' the action is internalized in an essay on art and life set in a slaughterhouse.
