Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
What or, rather, who makes all that noise outside that torments kids at bedtime? Parents, of course, will always look for a logical explanation: "It's just a truck, a clackity train,/ a thunderstorm, the zooooom of a plane." But Greene (Barnyard Song) and Smith (A Creepy Countdown) step inside the imaginations of children and propose that such noises are the work of two creatures: Bugbear, who brings to mind Charles Addams's Uncle Fester; and Bugaboo, a green, ghoulish, plush-toy-like critter. Bugbear "loves to frighten you and me/ with eeeks and cr-r-reaks and big bad h-ow-owls/ and tiny squeaks and catlike yee-ow-owls!" while Bugaboo's " `wooooo' will chill your spine" (all the onomatopoeia gets a further comic nudge from spooky typography). The hobgoblin duo very nearly succeeds in terrorizing the children of one representative household. Smith's watercolor-and-ink vignettes knowlingly depict the boy and girl in several tried-and-true cowering positions (hiding under the bed, pulling covers over their heads, etc.). But the kids finally triumph by turning the tables: with "a horrible "Boo!!!" they send Bugbear and Bugaboo scampering. Delivered in a funny way, the message has the authority of FDR: the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Ages 4-7. (Mar.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

PreS-Gr 1-What makes those creaks, those shrieks in the middle of the night? Why does the house tremble and why do shadows appear on the wall? Grown-ups blame the breeze, a passing train, a yowling cat. But the brother and sister in this gently scary tale discover that it's really Bugbear (a bald and portly mischief-maker in red-and-white striped shorts) and Bugaboo (his green, furry, and similarly rotund little sidekick). Together, these impish creatures try their best to terrorize the youngsters but when the pajama-clad siblings catch sight of the troublesome duo, they turn the tables on them. Springing from their hiding place and shouting a horrible "Boo" of their own, they so startle Bugbear and Bugaboo that the two little bullies are last seen heading across the lawn at a terrified run. While taking some liberties with rhyme and meter, the rollicking verse is full of onomatopoeia and spooky noises. Nighttime blues and the wide, frightened eyes of the children provide the chills in the watercolor, pen, and ink illustrations but the reassuring glow in the lighted rooms, the gentle presence of parents, and the diminutive size of the trespassers effectively temper the shivers. A great opportunity for adults to howl and yowl at bedtime storytimes, these "boos" deserve a resounding yeah.-Carol Ann Wilson, Westfield Memorial Library, NJ Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
When all the town is fast asleep, two creatures crawl and creep, making eerie sounds and playing scary tricks on children. The grownups try to explain away the children's fears as they cry and complain, but of course they can't see the menacing shadows of the two tricksters-one tall, one small. Told in rhyme with the sounds printed in big, bold letters, the action is played out in full double-page spreads that colorfully depict Bugbear, a giant-like being wearing red striped shorts, and Bugaboo, a potbellied, green, furry animal. Notes from the author and illustrator (on the verso of the title page) explain that the names in folklore mean "hobgoblins" and describe the fun the illustrator had in creating the creatures. Kids will delight in the satisfying switch when the children gather up their courage and turn the tables on the two by yelling "BOO" and chasing them away. The playful exaggeration in the illustrations of the two wide-eyed children and the two wild and wiley tricksters sets up the twist neatly and the type style in BlockheadUnplugged contributes to the spookiness of the sound effects. On repeated reads, kids will eagerly join in with the word sounds as they anticipate the child-size victory. (Picture Book. 4-7)

    Kids love this book!

My first grade class nominated this book as best book in our school wide best book election. The illustrations are wonderful, adding excitement and suspense to a terrific text that is rich in fun words that children like to hear. A perfect read aloud for school age students! The best part is the kids in the story win! They handle the problem of these naughty, adorable little monsters all by themselves sending the troublemakers packing. Yeah kids and way to go to both the author and illustrator of this great kid centered kid book.
