Effect Of Campthothecin On Chytridiomycete Fungi.

Overview

Chytridiomycosis is a fatal fungal infection of amphibians involving the keratinized portions of the epidermis and is believed to inhibit an amphibian's ability to absorb water and breath. Chytridiomycosis is caused by a chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, and has been largely implicated in worldwide declines and extinctions of several amphibian species. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the growth of chytridiomycete fungi could be inhibited by the presence of campthothecin, ...

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the growth of chytridiomycete fungi could be inhibited by the presence of campthothecin, and if so, at what concentration(s). Two isolates of B. dendrobatidis and one isolate of Rhizophydium brooksanium were tested for sensitivity to campthothecin at concentrations ranging from 25 to 200 mug/mL. A spectrophotometric assay was used to monitor the increase in the optical density of liquid cultures over a 30 day incubation period. Analysis of results revealed that although there were significant interactions between fungal isolates and certain treatments, P < 0.0500, optical densities in campthothecin amended media were not significantly lower when compared to unamended controls. Therefore it may be concluded that chytridiomycete fungal growth is not affected by the presence of campthothecin at any of the concentrations tested in this study.
