Overview

This book is about enhancing your true leadership potential. Leadership is the most powerful transferrable skill on the planet – the skill employers pay the most to acquire. If you have a desire to enhance your career, to become absolutely essential to any organization, and to become a better leader tomorrow than you are today, this book is for you.

From the battlefield, to the board room, to the White House, good leaders are desperately needed in every corner of America.

What makes some leaders more effective than others? How do some leaders actually create their own conditions for success? What was their secret? How did they go from ordinary to extraordinary? Over the past five decades, I have been privileged to work with some of America’s most exceptional men and women that were real game changers, self-starters, and TRUE Leaders.

I learned that to become absolutely essential to any organization, you must be perceived as a TRUE Leader; someone who can be counted on to create the conditions for success, consistently produce excellent results, and improve their team.

In this book, you’ll learn;

The DEFINITIONS and COMPONENTS of leadership and followership
The 8 CORE COMPETENCIES of effective leadership
What is MOST IMPORTANT to all TRUE Leaders
How EFFECTIVENESS, EFFICIENCY AND CONSISTENCY help you
How true leaders determine their FOCUS and PRIORITY
The different STYLES of leadership
How leadership shapes an organization’s CULTURE and CLIMATE
The CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESS for TRUE Leaders
The value of a LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY
The POWER OF INFLUENCE – the essence of effective leadership

What you’ll find in this book is what my TRUE Leaders taught me over 50+ years in both the US Military (as a US Army Officer) and in Corporate America (as an Executive Coach). It is their good leadership I write about.

What made them TRUE Leaders, worthy of my trust, respect, and emulation? I wanted to be like them because they got it; they knew what mattered most - how to treat people with dignity, respect and kindness. I wrote this book to further the cause of teaching good leadership and followership, to pay tribute to the great men and women I willing followed, and to help you achieve your true leadership potential.

This book is unique for two reasons. First, it offers real world solutions to the problems leaders face every day. The practical tools found here are those you can easily learn today and actually use tomorrow. Second, you will also learn how to create and shape the Conditions for Success in your organization, whether in your company, agency, church, team or family.

My TRUE Leaders had several things in common. They all effectively influenced the actions of others by skillfully using the Core Leadership Competencies of Planning, Organizing, Communicating, Operating, Problem Solving, Awareness, Motivating, and Character.

In 2011, I was inspired to write THE EFFECTIVE LEADER’S GUIDE series of books because I wanted to pass on what I learned from them, many of whom are not here today to tell their story. So, before their lessons disappeared forever, I have dedicated the past two years of my life documenting everything I learned from them. This series of books is about them. Thanks to them, I have collected thousands of small and simple things that employer’s expect you to know, that are not taught anywhere, about creating the conditions for success, consistently producing excellent results, and improving your team.

If you’re looking for a way to enhance your career, to become absolutely essential to any organization, and to become a better leader tomorrow than you are today, this is your book.

Meet the Author

I was lucky! From age 7, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to be a Soldier. In 1964, four days after graduating from High School, I joined the US Army and found myself in Basic Training and Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey.A year later, I became a Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1970, I graduated as a 2d Lieutenant headed to Airborne and Ranger School, then off to Viet Nam for a year.In 1978, I returned to West Point to teach Military Science and earned my Master’s Degree from Long Island University in night school. My greatest achievement during my time in the military was helping 1400-soldiers begin their college education during my last two years in Germany as a Battalion Commander. I wanted to give my soldiers something of real value - something that no one could ever take away. After 24 years as a US Army Officer, from Viet Nam to Desert Storm, I retired in 1992. I then decided, with a little help from Anthony Robbins, that my second career would be as an Executive Coach. For the next 20 years, while working for four of the largest outplacement and e-cruiting companies in America from Seattle, San Diego, to Kansas City, I helped hundreds of people, from recent college graduates to CEO’s, find meaningful careers. In 2011, I retired a second time and decided to document everything I learned from all those I willingly followed over the past 50+ years, in both the US Military (as a US Army Officer) and in Corporate America (as an Executive Coach), before their lessons were lost forever. I wanted to pay tribute to them because many of them aren’t here today to tell their stories. My greatest joy comes from writing books that help others avoid or overcome the problems I’ve faced during my lifetime. That same year, I created The Career Maker, a site dedicated to providing career advice to those who want to enhance their career by becoming absolutely essential to any employer, have just lost their job, are changing careers (like those leaving the US Military), or are stuck in a dead-end job just trading time for money.Today, I’m privileged to live in Lee’s Summit, Missouri (near Kansas City), where I enjoy writing, eating sushi, and watching movies with family, friends and my best friend - my wife, Diana. When I count my blessings, I always count her twice.
