Reflecting the more recent developments in investigations of the effects of acidification on forest decline--particularly the Soiling Project, a pioneering European study which ran from 1966 to 1973--this volume discusses element budgets and changes in soil chemistry for both European and North American forest ecosystems. It addresses the effects of acid deposition not only on root and canopy growth of forest trees, but also on the micro-and macroscopic flora and fauna. Pathogenic organisms influenced by the chemical and physical properties of the soil are also addressed.
