Overview

A leader in respiratory care education for more than 35 years, this comprehensive textbook lays a strong foundation for a successful career. You'll gain a thorough understanding of the role of respiratory therapists (RTs), a scientific basis for treatment, and clinical applications. In-depth discussions progress from the principles of respiratory care to applied anatomy and physiology, assessment, discussion of specific respiratory illnesses, basic therapy, acute and critical care, and preventive and long-term care. Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and Therapist Driven Protocols (TDPs) in appropriate chapters familiarize you with patient care guidelines and decision trees as they are used in practice.

• A full-color format makes the text easier to read and brings out key detail in the illustrations.
• Mini-Clinis provide short vignettes applying content in the text to actual patient care, asking you to think critically on problems you may encounter.
• Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) cover the steps of patient care with important information on indications/contraindications, hazards and complications, assessment of need, assessment of outcome, and monitoring.
• Therapist-Driven Protocols (TDPs) provide decision trees developed by hospitals, helping you to assess patients, initiate care, and evaluate outcomes.
• Rules of Thumb highlights rules, formulas, and key points important to clinical practice.
• Measurable Learning Objectives parallel the areas tested by the NBRC exam, helping you identify important information that goes beyond memorization and recall.
• Key Point summaries in bulleted format help you clearly identify key concepts covered in each chapter.
• A Workbook includes a wide range of activities such as NBRC-type multiple-choice questions, case studies, experiments, and hands-on activities, allowing you to apply the knowledge you've gained from the text.

• New History of Respiratory Care chapter describes the evolution and challenges of this profession.
• Updated content reflects changes in the field, with additions to the text including:

• More coverage of evidence-based care
• Information on HIPAA
• A discussion of computer applications in a health care setting
• An emphasis on how nutrition impacts the respiratory system

• The role of the respiratory therapist in disease management is discussed in the Cardiopulmonary Diseases section.
• A new appendix cross-references the NBRC examination matrices for the CRT and RRT to content in the book, making it easier to prepare for the NBRC exams.
• New editor Robert Kacmarek, a well-known figure in respiratory care, has joined Robert Wilkins and James Stoller.

Follows the text to reinforce major concepts and ensure optimum learning of respiratory principles. Clearly written and organized to keep students' attention and increase learning. Questions, review and highlights incorporate the three areas tested on the NBRC exam - recall, analysis, and application - to help students identify important information that goes beyond memorization and recall. Activities include: Vocabulary review - matching, fill-in-the-blank exercises, and crossword puzzles. Reviews of chapter objectives check understanding of primary concepts. Chapter highlights review key points from each chapter of EGAN'S FUNDAMENTALS OF RESPIRATORY CARE. Case studies apply the knowledge gained to real-life scenarios. Review questions and NBRC discussion allow practice with questions styled after those on the NBRC exams and learn what to expect on the board exams. Food for thought - critical thinking questions move beyond recall and apply concepts to the world

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT (William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: In its 40th year, the revised ninth edition of this book is considered by many to be the authoritative text in the field of respiratory care. Last updated in 2003, this edition continues the tradition of defining the profession of respiratory care by providing the requisite information for students and serving as a valued resource for practitioners.
Purpose: This book provides the education foundation for respiratory therapy students in training, yet serves as a treasured reference for practitioners.
Audience: It is uniquely written for both respiratory care students and practitioners. The authors, unquestionably, are experts in their fields of expertise.
Features: This edition contains an unprecedented 51 chapters in seven sections. Each chapter begins with objectives, an outline, and key terms and ends with references. Four-color images, tables, "Rule of Thumb" notations, "Mini Clini" case studies, and key points reinforce learning concepts throughout the book. Four appendixes covering temperature corrections, STPD to BTPS and STPS to STPD conversions, normal values for vitals, blood gas parameters, hematology, blood chemistry, hemodynamics, and pulmonary function are supplemented by additional information (common medical abbreviations, equations, etc.) on the inside covers. The book ends with an excellent glossary and index.
Assessment: More than just a textbook for students, this ninth edition defines the standards of practice in respiratory care and serves as an invaluable resource, particularly for hospital-based practitioners. Given the continuous advances in medicine and their impact on respiratory care, it is hoped the authors will continue to revise this book to educate and reinforce practice standards.
From the Publisher
REVIEWS OF PREVIOUS EDITIONS:

"The Egan's manual for respiratory therapy is the most beneficial learning tool and reference manual that I have come across in all of my career. The information in this book is not only easy to understand but layed out in a manner that makes finding what you need an easy task. It gives a thorough review of all the important clinical data and physical characteristics needed to become a competent practitioner... I would recommend this book as a reference tool to any student pursuing a career as a nurse, respiratory therapist, or physician. While this book may apply specific emphasis to the respiratory related field, it will reinforce your nursing or medicinal background by examining disease processes from a cardiopulmonary standpoint. This book has been a valuable learning tool and greatly aided me in both respiratory and nursing related classes." - Christopher R. Thomas, United States (Amazon.com reviewer)

"This book is simply THE BEST RESPIRATORY PRACTICE BOOK out there... I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT." - Anonymous User, Brooklyn, NY (Amazon.com reviewer)

"Egan's is the most comprehensive textbook regarding Respiratory Care. Every respiratory therapist should have a copy of this book. The most important book they will ever own... especially for students." - Adam Spartz, Cbus (Amazon.com reviewer)

"This book is great because it incorporates the AARC guidelines and it discusses not only how therapies work but how to instruct patients as well as hazards. This book can take the place of having to buy 3 separate respiratory books." - Lisa Nowaczyk, Chicago, IL (Amazon.com reviewer)

    An absolute miracle.

As a CRT, I recently returned to school to become a registered RT. I remember suffering with Wyka during my years of becoming a CRT. Anyone who has come across the Wyka book would certainly know how dreadful it was and which eventually led me to look for other sources in respiratory. Now that I am a returning student for advancement the school provided me with Egan's fundamentals of respiratory care and I can't believe how much of an improvement it is from Wyka. Egan's makes it easier for the reader to understand the concepts and content and has clearer and better explanations of the respiratory material. Illustrations are very helpful and they're colored which is a plus instead of perusing through a black and white, blurry picture. I am just amazed and in awe at how much of a difference it is from what I use to contend with. Anyone going into the respiratory care field should definitely own this book!
