Overview

While doing the research for the Butter in the Well series, the author found old recipes and home remedies along with the family and community histories. The recipes had been handwritten in old ledger books, on scraps of paper, in margins of old cookbooks, and forever etched in the memories of the pioneer's children Hubalek interviewed. As a result, Egg Gravy is a collection of recipes the pioneer women used during their homesteading days. Most of the recipes can be traced back to the original women that homesteaded the real-life setting of Butter in the Well.

Meet the Author

Linda Hubalek grew up on the Kansas farm that eventually became famous when she wrote her first book series, Butter in the Well, about the Swedish immigrant family that actually homesteaded this place in 1869.
Hubalek’s college degree is in agriculture and she has done agronomy research, owned a horticulture business, and raised American buffalo—besides writing historical fiction books about her ancestors that homesteaded on the Kansas prairie.
Readers compare Hubalek’s books as a combination of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House on the Prairie” books, “The Emigrants” series by Vilhelm Moberg, and a Willa Cather novel.

The author mentioned sections (quotes) from the first two books of the Butter in the Well series, and then added recipes. Never thought about how to make floor paint or vinegar. Or that to make angel food from scratch used 11 egg whites, but you had to raise the chickens first and gather the eggs to make the cake...and then what do you do with 11 egg yolks? Sunshine cake or homemade mayonnaise. Good book for armchair "cookbook readers".
