Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
What came first-the chicken or the egg? While we may never know, there is plenty about birds in this entry in the "Usborne Beginners" series. Birds lay eggs, many build nests and the varieties of these are fascinating. Not all eggs are the same shape, color or size and the methods of incubation vary. Emperor penguins keep the egg warm by balancing it on their feet and keeping it in a brood pouch for two months. The growth of a chick may take as little as ten days or well over two months. Some birds are born and ready to move out and feed themselves immediately, others require parental care. That first flight can be daunting, but some birds learn from their parents. It is all illustrated with great photographs and drawings. The book has a table of contents, glossary, index and refers the reader to Usborne's Quick Links Web site. The back cover lists some Internet safety rules and also has a note for adults. This book would also be a good choice for kids not reading on grade level or those in ESOL programs. 2003, Usborne, Ages 5 to 8.
