Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
"Butterflies look like flower petals blowing in the breeze." From that first line, a reader might conclude that this is a book of poetry. It isn't. Rather it is a scientific explanation of the life cycle of a monarch butterfly. As part of the "First Graphics" series from Capstone Press it is presented in the popular graphic novel format, thus making it accessible to even the most reluctant reader. In a series of panels comprising a mere twenty-one pages Knudsen and Smith combine to explain the butterfly life cycle from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult and back again by using a combination of text, dialog, and full color, fun, yet scientifically correct illustrations. Back matter includes a glossary, comprehensive index, and suggestions for further reading, both in print and on the Internet using "Facthound.com," a listing of Internet sites which have all been thoroughly researched to insure they are safe for young readers. This little volume is a nice complement to the science curriculum in the early elementary grades and will be a welcome addition to classroom and library shelves everywhere. Reviewer: Pat Trattles
