Gr 4-8-These books are attractive improvements over their predecessors (1997, 1992, both Lerner). They cover the same basic topics-"The Land," "History and Government," "The People," "Cultural Life," and "The Economy"-but the appendixes have more information, such as a time line and "fast facts" about the flag, the national anthem, famous people, and sights to see, and the indexes are more extensive. The series Web site lists news as well as downloadable photos and maps with information on how to create a bibliography. Although dense with text, the volumes have an abundance of color photos rather than the black-and-white pictures of the old series. Page design is reminiscent of a computer page with arrows from the photo captions pointing to the illustrations. Even maps have a more appealing palette and are full page, and they indicate locations of major cities. Because these revisions are actually major changes, it's time to weed out the old and bring in the new.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
