Overview

Discover the wonders of ancient Egypt through a fascinating journal from a lost expedition — a treasure trove of fact and fantasy featuring a novelty element on every spread.

Who can resist the allure of ancient Egypt — and the thrill of uncovering mysteries that have lain hidden for thousands of years? Not the feisty Miss Emily Sands, who in 1926, four years after the discovery of King Tut's tomb, led an expedition up the Nile in search of the tomb of the god Osiris. Alas, Miss Sands and crew soon vanished into the desert, never to be seen again. But luckily, her keen observations live on in the form of a lovingly kept journal, full of drawings, photographs, booklets, foldout maps, postcards, and many other intriguing samples. Here are just a few of EGYPTOLOGY's special features:

— an extravagantly gilded cover, featuring a raised Horus hawk pendant with three encrusted gems
— a playable game of Senet — ancient Egyptian checkers — including board, pieces, original-style dice, and rules
— a souvenir booklet showing how to read simple hieroglyphs
— a scrap of textured "mummy cloth"
— a facsimile of the gilded mummy mask of King Tut
— a gilded eye-of-Horus amulet with a "jewel" at the end

Rich with information about life in ancient Egypt and peppered with Miss Sands's lively narration, EGYPTOLOGY concludes with a letter from the former Keeper of Antiquities at the British Museum, explaining which parts of this unique tale may be accepted as fact, which are guided by legend, and which reflect the author's delightful sense of fancy.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Following up on the winning format of the bestselling Dragonology, Egyptology: Search for the Tomb of Osiris by Emily Sands, illus. by Nick Harris, Ian Andrew and Helen Ward, takes readers from Cairo on the 1st of November, 1926, to the Sphinx on the Giza plateau, through the Valley of the Kings where Tutankhamen's tomb lies, and finally to the completion of the mission in January 1927: the tomb of Osiris. A golden cover bearing a Horus hawk with "three gems" opens to the journal entries of Emily Sands, complete with detailed sketches of various tombs, modes of transport, etc., as well as full-color paintings, plus postcards to lift and envelopes to open. Sands's clever quips and fascinating facts will hold the rapt attention of novices to the topic and Egyptian fanatics alike. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-This oversized novelty book has a gold cover with red, plastic, "jewel" inlays to add to the drama. Written as an amateur Egyptologist's travel journal from 1926, each spread covers a distinct area of antiquity and is mainly factual in content, except for the author's chatty asides. The type resembles that of an old manual typewriter and the photos, reproductions, and sketches make the journal seem more realistic. There are papyrus pull-outs, pop-up art, minibooks, and fold-out maps and an envelope in the back with period postcards, ticket stubs, etc. Libraries will find the book useful for teaching journal writing, but difficult to keep together.-Carol Wichman, formerly at Northridge Local Schools, Dayton, OH Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

    I Also Recommend:

    Egyptology

In high school I experienced a breif obsession with Egyptology fueled by the Mummy movies. This book tells you many things about Egypt and its ancient history, accompanied with beautiful illustrations. The journal is realistic and has an entralling story that definitely leaves you wanting to know more! I would recommend this to anyone.

    Interesting Approach to Ancient Egypt

This book is written and laid out like a scrapbook of the author's adventures in Egypt. My children enjoyed opening flaps and reading through the notes under photos. Very fun and engaging way to teach.

Get ready to travel back in time

Fun and entertaing diary of an explorer who sets great sights on the discoveries of ancient Egypt. The format makes it easy to explore and understand archaeology and the lure of the mysterious and hidden. It brought to life more reality for our recent visit to see King Tut exhibit. Opened up hours of discussion and follow up reading and adventures about digging up the past, journaling, and careers. Great for tween ages.

If you are an Egypt freak like me, listen up!

I have been studying Egyptology for many years. This book was given to me as a gift for Christmas. First of all, I must say that there are some really cool facts in here. If you are a history teacher and you are teaching Ancient Times, I highly suggest that you consider checking this book out.Or maybe even considering purchasing it. I have been studying Egyptology for about six years and this book will definitely come in handy. Also, if you are interested in other studies, you should consider checking out the other really amazing Candlewick Press books. If I could rate higher I would.

    Egyptology

What a colorful and informative book. I bought it for my 8 year old granddaughter and although a lot of the reading is above her skill level, she loved the book and did gain in her knowledge of Eyptology. She is facinated by the subject.

    totaly coolio!

I'm only in the fifth grade, yet i love ancient Egypt. This book makes me really think about what happened to Emily Sands, while, at the same time, it makes me wonder where Osiris's tomb is. I'll probably keep this book FOREVER!

    Interesting...

This book may be a fabricated account, but it's still a very satisfying read. It provides many facts about ancient Egypt's history and culture, such as an in-depth description of the Book of the Dead, a game of Senet, and a booklet on Hieroglyphics, among others. It's definitely worth the price.

    A good effort...

Well, it is not a 'history' book, but I guess it is not meant to be. Ms. Sands' adventure throughout Egypt may have never happened however, the book is a nice read.

    It's dolomite, baby!

This book was so cool, it has twice as many secret envelopes as Dragonology. They're both very good books and I recommend having both of them in your personal library.

And to know that this book was like a giant scrap book/journal rolled into one was a great idea! I would highly reccommend this book to those that love Egypt or travel or jsut love to read. Wow! What a trip!

This is a beautiful, wonderful book! The cover glistens like a real gold and it does have a true travel journal and scrapbook like feel, as if you were on a Egyptian dig and took photos, wrote about your adventure and gave details in your journal. This is really an altered book with a REAL sample of mummy cloth, a pull out map of Seti II temple, an open up map of ancient Egypt, a booklet on learning hieroglyphics, an envelope with removable game pieces to the Egyptian game senet with the small how to play game booklet, lift up photos, just a couple of items to mention but much more. There is even an envelope with a removable travel luggage tag, Egyptian postcards, and sample suitcase travel stickers! The sketches and the art work is beautiful. This book is not short on imagination. It takes you on a journey to ancient Egypt to search for the tomb of Osiris. There is mention that this was an actual journal from Emily Sand's but it could all be part of this journey. If you are fans of the Nick Bantock's Sabine and Griffin series, you will love this book! You'll be most pleasantly surprised! I feel EGYPTOLOGY is much better than Bantock's Sabine series books with far more graphics, more imagination and many more items to review. This book is definitely not just for kids but for adults as well. You will not be disappointed in this book. By the way, if you love dragons, check out their Dragonology book. That too is a altered wonderful find!
