Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Karen Leggett
It could be argued that there is nothing new under the sun in the surfeit of books about ancient Egypt, but DK is trying one more tack—ten books in one. Each heavy cardboard page includes holes for pictures, information, and little books: a comic book about the myth of Osiris, a series of tiny books about creator gods, protector gods, sky gods, royal gods, animal gods—each group appearing in a hole on a new page. "Egytpedia" provides "everything you ever wanted to know about ancient Egypt" in a regular hardbound book that is 4"x5," embedded in the larger book. A mummy-shaped book provides everything you ever wanted to know about making mummies. Another series of gradually appearing pictures shows the Egyptian social order, from worker, to soldier, priest, vizier, and pharaoh (all male). It is clever, thorough, and, like all DK books, filled with lavish photographs. The primary problem—and it is a serious one—is that the text on the main pages and especially the pages of the miniature books is very small and dense for readers of any age. It is hard to know if a young reader will sit long enough to read through even one small book. There also obvious difficulties in offering this book in a public place since it has so many pieces that can disappear, like the nose of the Sphinx. When used with care in the classroom or home, however, this elaborate book could fascinate yet another generation with the wonders of ancient Egypt. Reviewer: Karen Leggett

    This is a fantastic book!

My 6th grade son had a project to do for the Egyptology Museum at school. We rented every book we could get our hands on from the local library. Some of them were to confusing for him....and me to understand. Feeling completely frustrated, we went to our local Barnes and Noble and found this treasure sitting on the shelf. This book was so informative and fun to read. It has alot of mini pop-up books (not the kind for young children) built into the pages....So cool!! If we had known this book existed, we could have saved ourselves alot of frustration. We're happy to add this book to our collection.
