In the closed community of mountaineering there are legendary figures unknown to those outside. Krakauer, who writes about climbing for Smithsonian magazine, introduces some eccentrics and the places they gather. John Gill's reputation rests on ascents less than 30 feet high--he climbs boulders. The hard-drinking, pugnacious Burgess twins from Yorkshire are first-rate climbers and con men; they haven't held a job since 1975, yet manage to wander the globe bagging difficult peaks. Others climb frozen waterfalls in Valdez, Alaska, or attempt hazardous hang-gliding and bungee-jumping in Chamonix, where nearly 6000 people climb Mont Blanc every year. After taking us to Mt. McKinley (Denali), which has claimed more lives than the Eiger, Krakauer also describes canyoneering in the Mogollon Rim of Arizona and recounts his own nearly fatal solo climb of the Devil's Thumb in Alaska. Revising pieces that appeared in Outside and Smithsonian magazines, he describes being tent-bound in a storm, and the competition among bush pilots flying climbers to Denali. Fresh material discusses related sports: frozen waterwall climbing and box canyon exploration. The obligatory chapters on particular climbs--an aborted attempt on the Eiger Nordwand, a lone ascent of the Devil's Thumb--are less successful in revealing to nonclimbers the emotions that drive a climber.     Eiger Dreams is a collection of short stories and is not as good as Krakauer's other books. Some of the stories are very entertaining, while others are kind of boring. A good read if you like outdoor books though.

    Eiger Dreams: a book for and about mountaineering

    The book, EIGER DREAMS, is a great book for anybody that is into mountaineering or just rock climbing. The book is comprised of many short stories that Jon Krakauer had written for magazines in the past. He also includes a new story that is about Krakauer, himself, written just for this book. Each story is unique because each one is about a different climber and takes place on different mountains in the Himalayas, the Alps, the Rockies and in the many ranges of Alaska. One of the stories I enjoyed was "Devil's Thumb", which is about Krakauer quitting his job in Colorado and just driving north. He was heading to Alaska so that he could try to climb the north face of the Devil's Thumb, which had never been climbed. The story was enjoyable because of the great detail about the climbing and because of the mishaps, which made it funny. I chuckled when he accidentally set his tent on fire. My favorite story, however, is titled "Gill". John Gill grew up to become one of the top boulderers in the sport of rock climbing. This story was written when Gill was in his fifties and still climbing better than anyone else. If you have any interest in climbing, EIGER DREAMS will keep you captured from cover to cover, with all the action and suspense from each and every climb.

    UNCHAINED!

    Hot Damn! These are all the words that sum up this book. These are powerful, moving stories where at times, you feel as if you were there living these experiences. This book really proclaims, 'Never measure the height of a mountain until you have reached the top'

    Dreaming of the Eiger

    An amazing compilation of stories about risk takers and skilled alpinists. I loved each story equally, and am inspired to emulate the climbers in these stories. One of the best mountaineering books I've ever read.

    You will like this.

    Eiger Dreams is a compilation of stories of different climbing experiences by the author of 'Into Thin Air.' I thought Eiger Dreams was in some ways equally good, and I read Into Thin Air in one sitting.

    Terrific -- I'd like a 'Devil's Thumb' Movie!

    Just a great book, covering all aspects of mountaineering adventure. But the book transcends mountaineering. Human perseverence, courage in the face of death, the grind of athletic conditioning, the life style of the outdorrsman, these are all fascinatingly depicted. The comraderie among teammates is also covered in its complexities. Different attitudes between French and American cultures is also portrayed. It is a very rich, deep book. Besides that, it is a series of great adventures.
