This celebratory board book provides a colorful representation of a family Hanukkah celebration without the elaboration of the Macabee story save for one concluding illustration. The origins of the holiday is summed up in four concluding lines, “With blessings, songs, and bright menorahs,/Remembering heroes long before us,/ Our friends and family celebrate./On Hanukkah—eight is great.” Other than that reference, this is a book about candles, gifts, dreidels, and latkes. It will be up to the reader to interpret, according to their listeners’ abilities, the significant of the ninth Shamash candle, the dreidel game gambling for gelt, and the multiples of eight present throughout the book. However, simplicity is what board books are about and the happy, celebratory family extended with one set of grandparents will be a happy addition to Hanukkah story times for young children. Holiday books for young children are always welcome and popular if they are well done. Reviewer: Lois Rubin Gross; Ages 2 to 4.
