Bhante Gunaratana was ordained at the age of twelve as a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka, earned his PhD in philosophy from The American University, and has led meditation retreats, taught Buddhism, and lectured widely throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Bhante Henepola Gunaratana is the president of the Bhavana Society in High View, West Virginia, where he lives.

    I couldn't practice without it

    I don't live in an area where I have access to a temple or teachers to help me understand the basic principles of Buddhism; I have to study on my own. I was having a hard time fully understanding the Noble Eightfold Path and how it was applied to modern life. I searched for a long time and finally decided to try this book. I LOVE it! It was exactly what I was looking for. Bhante Henepola explains each area very well. The book is written in layman's terms and gives examples that apply to modern, western life. I have recommended this book to others and would DEFINITELY recommend it to anybody searching for a helping hand in their Buddhist practices.

    Buddha's Path is Made Clearer

    Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness is an easy-to-read, easy-to-follow guide on walking the buddha's path to happiness. Bhante Henepola Gunaratana continues his effort on bringing the Buddha's lessons to the average westerner who is searching for that 'something.' This book is a practical guide with step-by-step lessons on achieving happiness. The only thing missing is a companion workbook handy for workshops or for small groups. This is a book to be read slowly and to reread early and often. The lessons are penetrating and useful. The summaries at the end of each chapter are easy reference guides to refresh a reader's memory after completing that chapter or for easy reference at a later time.

    Based on the eightfold way

    This book is an attempt to explain the timeless paths of morality, concentration, and wisdom. The main point of the book comes down to the fact that living well is a skill that takes both practice and understanding. With stories, bulleted summaries, quotes from the sutras, and, most of all, relating to everyday concerns, the author teaches how to refrain from causing others to suffer. This, along with ending our own suffering, he says will lead to happiness.
