Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Readers can visit the eight planets of the solar system in this rhyming counting tour. The rounded, plastic planets--from Mercury to Neptune--poke through cardboard pages (but don't actually spin), disappearing as the book moves further out. The rhymes offer a serviceable introduction to each planet ("Mars has mountain ranges that rise up very high./ It has not one but two moons that orbit in its sky"). The futuristic digital art is complemented by photographs of the planets' surfaces--except for Pluto, "which is too small to be one." Ages 1–3. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
When I went to school there were nine planets that circled the sun. Now there are eight, so all those books I read are out of date. The cover presents all of the planets in relief which can be seen through die cut holes showing the sun and its planetary system. The planets are introduced according to their distance from the sun. First is Mercury with a brief description of its size and composition. It is closest to the sun and therefore is the smallest and hottest of the planets. On the opposing page there is a small inset photograph of this rocky airless planet. Venus is next and similar information is presented. Then it the Earth and readers learn that "this planet is filled with water, food, animals and air." This journey to the outer edge of the solar system includes a look at Mars which has two moons; Jupiter with its giant red spot; Saturn with its rings of ice and rock; Uranus which is made of gas like Jupiter and Neptune which due to its distance from the sun is very cold. What happened to Pluto? It is too small to be considered a planet. An easy lesson and designed in a way to make it seem like play rather than an educational exercise. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
