Als Hanni Heusser wuchs Johanna Spyri mit fünf Geschwistern in Hirzel, im Schweizerischen Kanton Zürich, auf. Hanni galt als das fröhlichste und lebhafteste Kind im Doktorhaus und war im ganzen Dorf beliebt.Nach einer sorglosen, sonnigen Kinder- und Jugendzeit heiratete sie den Rechtsanwalt Bernhard Spyri aus Zürich und zog in die Enge der Stadt. Die Ehe war nicht wirklich glücklich. Johanna mochte das häusliche Dasein und die dazugehörige Arbeit nicht besonders. Nach ein paar Jahren kam der kleine Bernhard Diethelm zur Welt und beglückte seine Mutter sehr. Der Junge erbte vom Vater die musikalische Begabung und von der Mutter die lebhafte Art. Nach seinem Studium erkrankte Sohn Bernhard und starb im Frühling 1884 an Tuberkulose. Im Dezember des gleichen Jahres verschied ebenso Johanna Spyris Ehemann.In der Einsamkeit wandte sich Johanna Spyri komplett dem Schreiben zu. Besonders gerne erinnerte sie sich mit ihrem Schaffen an ihre sonnige Kinderzeit.Ihr bekanntestes Werk &quo;Heidi“ erschien Ende 1879 und wurde sofort zum Grosserfolg. Mittlerweile ist es in über 50 Sprachen übersetzt worden. Ihr Schaffen ermöglichte Johanna Spyri auch alleine ein komfortables Leben. Sie starb am 7.
