Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Karen S Yehle, PhD, MS, RN (Purdue University School of Nursing)
Description: This is a pocket guide designed for healthcare professionals that already have a basic understanding of EKG interpretation. It has a number of algorithms and charts such as a rhythm regularity summary.
Purpose: According to the author, the pocket guide's purpose is to be a quick reference for healthcare professionals in the clinical setting. It is not a complete EKG textbook in miniature. The book assumes prior EKG knowledge and provides the "bare bones" essentials needed for rhythm interpretation.
Audience: The author that the user needs to have basic EKG interpretation skills. A novice in EKG interpretation would struggle with this pocket guide as it does not include the depth and extra explanations found in typical EKG books. This pocket guide is not for the learner who is a novice in 12-lead EKG interpretation.
Features: The book presents all of the basic arrhythmias and approximately half of the book includes 12-lead EKG interpretation. The summaries on atrial, junctional, and ventricular arrhythmias are quite helpful, as are the rhythm regularity summary. The font size used for the algorithms is quite small, and that could be a challenge for some readers. Additionally, no references are included.
Assessment: This is a useful pocket guide. It must be stressed, however, that the user must have prior knowledge and experience in basic EKG and 12-lead interpretation. It is definitely not intended for the novice in EKG interpretation.
