La joven Ilona esconde un pasado terrible en su Hungría natal, sometida al terror soviético. Es una mujer zarandeada por el destino. En Barcelona, conoce a Miguel. Además de vivir un gran amor con él, este le enseña oficio de luthier. La felicidad se rompe cuando Ilona viaja a Budapest y permanece allí un largo periodo de tiempo para cuidar a su madre.
Otto le pide a Ilona que dediquen su tiempo a fabricar un violonchelo y esta ocupación se convierte para el anciano en lo más importante de su vida. Ilona tiene otros intereses: reconstruir su relación con Miguel.
Durante tres meses, las vidas de Clea, Otto e Ilona se entrelazan, se llenan de confidencias, de secretos, de verdades a medias, de medias mentiras, de descubrimientos, y acaban formando un mosaico en el que nada es lo que parece. El violonchelo será en última instancia el desencadenante que los protagonistas esperan para encauzar la segunda oportunidad de sus vidas y retomar los cabos sueltos que les impedían a cada uno, por distintos motivos, ser felices.
