Antonio Skármeta nació en Antofagasta (Chile) y se graduó en Filosofía y Literatura en la Universidad de Chile y en la de Columbia en Nueva York. Sus novelas y libros de cuentos han sido traducidos a veinticinco idiomas. Algunos de ellos, reeditados permanentemente, figuran entre los clásicos de la literatura contemporánea.

Su novela El cartero de Neruda alcanzó un éxito mundial y la película basada en ella obtuvo cinco nominaciones al Oscar y el entusiasmo de lectores y espectadores. Ha sido distinguido por el gobierno de Francia como Caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras. Italia le concedió el título de Comendador y Alemania la Medalla Goethe. Sus obras han obtenido algunos de los más prestigiosos premios internacionales: La boda del poeta tuvo el Prix Médicis en Francia y el Grinzane Cavour en Italia; La chica del trombón recibió el Elsa Morante, y No pasó nada, el Boccaccio Internacional.
