Ha escrito también las novelas La mano del amo (1991) y El vuelo de la reina (2002), vertidas a ocho lenguas. Es autor de los relatos Lugar común la muerte (1979) y La pasión según Trelew (1974). Es columnista permanente de La Nación de Buenos Aires, El País de Madrid y The New York Times. Dirige el programa de Estudios Latinoamericanos en la Rutgers University de Nueva Jersey, donde es profesor distinguido y escritor residente.
