His latest novel helps establish the Nicaraguan detective story as a new subgenre. The mystery begins with an abandoned yacht off the coast of Laguna de Perlas containing a bloodstained t-shirt and the business card of a missing woman hidden in a book. Narcotics Inspector Dolores Morales and his Watson, Deputy Inspector Bert Dixon, have a long history of partnership—and clever banter—beginning with their time as guerrillas in the Sandinista revolution. Managua has since become a hotbed of corruption, drug trafficking, and murder in which they try to uphold their ideals, with all the requisite irony and hardboiled cynicism. The narcotics department's cleaning lady, die-hard revolutionary doña Sofía, provides an interesting counterpoint, adding humor and playing an unexpected role in solving the mystery. Sergio Ramírez, ganador del Primer Premio Internacional Alfaguara de Novela con Margarita, está linda la mar en 1998, nació en Masatepe, Nicaragua, en 1942. Es parte de la generación de escritores latinoamericanos que surgió después del boom, y tras un largo exilio voluntario en Costa Rica y Alemania abandonó por un tiempo su carrera literaria para incorporarse a la revolución sandinista que derrocó a la dictadura del último Somoza. Reemprendió la escritura con la novela Castigo divino (1988), que obtuvo el Premio Dashiel Hammet en España, y la siguiente, Un baile de máscaras, ganó el Premio Laure Bataillon a la mejor novela extranjera aparecida en Francia en 1998. Alfaguara ha publicado también sus Cuentos completos, con un prólogo de Mario Benedetti (1998); Mentiras verdaderas (ensayos sobre la creación literaria, 2001); el volumen de cuentos Catalina y Catalina (2001), y la novela Sombras nada más (2002). Margarita está linda la mar ganó además el Premio Latinoamericano de Novela José María Arguedas, otorgado por Casa de las Américas en La Habana.
