The title hit me when I first noticed the book. I simply had to find out what this was about. The devil: all encompassing, larger than life and Ms Prym: ordinary, human, anonymous. The title sets out the basics of the story: the ordinary versus the extraordinary. The story starts off quite happily and the scene is immediately set. The quiet village is described through its inhabitants but the reader immediately picks up that something is due to happen... and the tension rises. The story is clearly structured and Coelho's style is a very transparent one. No fancy literary mechanisms at first sight, but then again, one must look beyond what he describes, just as the story tells us to listen to what people do not say and to try and see whatever people may want to hide. The book does not tolerate that one puts it down; the story imposes itself upon the reader. Paulo Coelho does not let go until the last word is said. Good and evil, man and god, life and death, pride and fall in one mind-blowing book.

This was a excellent book. It makes you think not only about the people involved but how you live your everyday life. How quickly you be something you thought you weren't. A brilliant book that everyone should read!!
