Dividida en dos partes, la novela cuenta la historia de una reunion entre varios representantes de grupos cristianos que, en distintos ambitos, crearon su propia historia religiosa. En este sentido, lo que se plantea es una tesis conocida por los historiadores: la invencion de la figura de Jesus, que solo es un instrumento para identificar un pensamiento religioso concreto. Se busca, de esta forma, una explicacion al inicio de un cambio en las creencias cristianas, que pasaron de la absoluta comprension al extrano a la destruccion especifica de unos pobres hombres que tenian un pensamiento diferente.

Ademas, y lo que es mas importante, contiene la doctrina construida por la secta de los manestros llamados Judas (todos los maestros de la secta asumen ese nombre, como era habitual en la epoca), con toda la belleza de una religion plena de amor y de comprension.
Algo curioso ocurrio con la escritura de la obra. Su autor, Pedro Rodriguez Lopez, la termino e inscribio en los registros correspondientes poco tiempo antes -y desconociendo del todo su existencia real- de que surgiera la noticia de que el evangelio de Judas se habia encontrado.
