Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde (Dublín 1854ís 1900). Escritor irlandés, partidario de la teoría del arte por el arte, mantuvo una actitud esteticista y extravagante ante la vida, que le llevó a enfrentarse con muchos prejuicios sociales. Fue condenado a dos años de cárcel a causa de su homosexualidad y murió en la más absoluta pobreza. Sus escritos muestran un estilo elegante e irónico, sutil y agresivo a un tiempo. De su obra lírica son de destacar La balada de la cárcel de Reading (1898) y De profundis (1905). Entre sus principales obras narrativas figuran El príncipe feliz y otros cuentos (1888), El crimen de lord Arthur Saville y otros relatos (1888) y El retrato de Dorian Gray (1891) y, entre sus piezas teatrales, El abanico de lady Windermere (1892), Un marido ideal (1895) y La importancia de llamarse Ernesto (1895).
