En el siglo XII, una secta judía descubre que con poco más de doscientas combinaciones de signos alfabéticos y arcilla roja, se podría crear a un ser dispuesto a servir a la humanidad. Pero había un temor: Ese ser crecía desmesuradamente. Así que decidieron grabar en su frente la palabra emeth (verdad), y cuando se decidiera su muerte, bastaba con eliminar una letra: meth (muerte). Ese era el destino de El Golem, quien ahora reposa en una sinagoga praguense. El mito de El Golem ha inspirado muchas obras, pero entre todas destaca el poema fundamental de Jorge Luis Borges, que en alguna estrofa dice: "El rabí lo miraba con ternura / y con algún horror. ¿Cómo (se dijo) / puede engendrar ese penoso hijo (...)?"..
