Children's Literature - Toni Jourdan
Doménikos Theotokpoulos was born in Greece in the 1500s and attended a monastery school, where he trained to paint religious icons. He left there as a young man to learn by studying other artists and pursue a career in art. He started in Venice, Italy and ended up in Toledo, Spain. There, he was nicknamed “El Greco,” which means “The Greek” in Spanish. During his lifetime, artwork portrayed religious scenes primarily in oil paints. El Greco stood out from the others by elongating his figures and using unusual color combinations. He had the opportunity to paint for the King of Spain, although the outcome was not exactly what El Greco intended. Photos show paintings by El Greco and other painters of the time, so readers can compare the work of great artists of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The lifetime of El Greco is laid out in an easy-to-follow, elementary style. Animated illustrations tie together the painter’s lifetime. The end of the book includes a fun pop quiz, as well as a glossary and an index. High points are the timeline of El Greco’s life and the artwork, specifically “Burial of Count Orgaz.” A close-up perspective of the lower left side of the painting reveals a cameo of Jorge, the artist’s son, who El Greco painted into many of his works of art. This is an enjoyable read, and I highly recommend it to young readers who are interested in learning about great artists. Reviewer: Toni Jourdan; Ages 7 to 10.
