Será entonces cuando aparecerá en su vida un anciano con el que acabará compartiendo algo más que partidas de ajedrez en el Golden Gate Park de San Francisco. Finalmente, cuando la situación ya se vuelve insostenible, decide enfrentarse a sus miedos más profundos y seguir el camino que le marca su corazón. Como consecuencia de esta nueva actitud vital, dejará el trabajo, abandonará a una mujer que en verdad no le ha querido jamás, encontrará nuevos amigos, y aprenderá a vivir de nuevo con la inexperiencia de quien descubre un universo virgen, plagado de posibilidades, en el que todo es posible y todo está por hacer. Durante ese proceso conocerá, gracias a un programa de voluntariado en hospitales, a una niña enferma de cáncer que le enseñará, a pesar de la crudeza de la situación, a recuperar la ilusión por la vida. El jugador de ajedrez y la niña enferma serán los dos testigos de excepción de la transformación vital de Edward.
