En 1892, tras terminar sus estudios secundarios, fundó el periódico La Reforma. Hacia 1893, estudió en la Facultad de Medicina de Buenos Aires, de la que se graduó en 1897 de farmacéutico y en 1900 de médico. Ingenieros fue un miembro relevante de la Cátedra de Neurología y del Servicio de Observación de Alienados de la Policía de la Capital, el cual llegó a dirigir. Entre 1902-1913 dirigió los archivos de Psiquiatría y Criminología y se hizo cargo del Instituto de Criminología de la Penitenciaría Nacional de Buenos Aires, alternando su trabajo con conferencias en universidades europeas. En 1908 ocupó la Cátedra de Psicología Experimental en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Ese año fundó la Sociedad de Psicología. Ingenieros terminó sus estudios en las universidades de París, Ginebra, Lausana y Heidelberg. Sus ensayos sociológicos El hombre mediocre y ensayos críticos y políticos, Hacia una moral sin dogmas, Las fuerzas morales tuvieron un gran influencia en el ámbito universitario de Argentina. En 1914 José Ingenieros se casó con Eva Rutenberg en Lausana, Suiza. Tuvieron cuatro hijos, Delia, Amalia, Julio y Cecilia. Hacia 1919 renunció a todos los cargos docentes y comenzó hacia 1920 su etapa política, participando de manera activa en favor del grupo Claridad, de tendencia comunista. Unos años después propuso la formación de la Unión Latinoamericana, una organización que difundió sus ideas antiimperialistas. En 1925, poco antes de morir fundó la revista Renovación, en la que escribió con los pseudónimos de Julio Barreda Lynch y de Raúl H. Cisneros. Ingenieros se distanció del socialismo de Estado y empezó a colaborar con periódicos anarquistas, varias de sus obras literarias reflejan este acercamiento. Murió el 31 de octubre de 1925, a los cuarenta y ocho años.
