Editorial Reviews

Gr 2-4-Young readers will enjoy these interesting books on wild cats. All three contain information on the special characteristics of each animal, their social lives, hunting, reproduction, and, most important, their relation to humans. This section mainly serves as a consciousness-raising tool. The series emphasizes how these animals are endangered and reaffirms the importance of preserving them. The books have all the structural elements that elementary students need in writing reports, and are filled with appealing full-color photos that will attract browsers. As a whole, this trio of books is a solid addition for libraries and bookstores.

Children's Literature
Like other books in the "Gatos salvajes!" series, this one acquaints readers with the big cat family, but unlike the others, this book covers two cats, the jaguars and the leopards. Although very closely related, the two animals have some differences. The first section of the book allows readers to learn the difference between the two based on bodily characteristics and geographic location. Other sections feature special physical attributes, the social life of the animals, their hunting skills, mating behavior, birthing practices, and their tenuous relationship with human beings. Unusual facts will keep readers interested throughout the book. For example, the cubs of both animals arrive in the world looking more like panthers due to their black fur with even blacker spots, and leopards are able to drag an animal more than twice their size up a tree to keep it from the jaws of hungry lions and wild dogs. In addition to large color photographs of both types of cat, the final page features a glossary, and index and more resources for further reading in both print and electronic formats. This book would make an excellent addition to a science or environmental curriculum or an elementary school media center. 2002, Blackbirch Press, Ages 7 to 10.
