Su bisabuelo Pedro, que era expósito y estuvo en Cuba, el abuelo, guardia de asalto que en 1939 acabó en un campo de concentración, sus padres, campesinos que llevaban una vida resignada y oscura, él mismo en su niñez y adolescencia, testigo de la gran transformación que sufre el lugar con el paso de los años. Van apareciendo también otros muchos habitantes de Mágina, como el jefe de policía, poeta vergonzante, el fotógrafo, un periodista, el comandante Galaz que en 1936 reprimió la sublevación militar, y el anciano médico, extrañamente relacionado con el descubrimiento de la momia de una mujer joven emparedada. En el curso de un largo período de tiempo, entre el asesinato de Prim en 1870 y la guerra del Golfo, estos personajes forman un apasionante mosaico de vidas a través de las cuales se recrea un pasado que ilumina y explica la personalidad del narrador. Antonio Múñoz Molina, en una historia admirablemente bien trabada y escrita con una seguridad y brillantez de estilo y de lenguaje excepcionales, nos da en El jinete polaco, Premio Planeta 1991, una obra única en el panorama de la literatura española contemporánea.
