Gr 1-3-The time-honored theme of the poor but good man who is rewarded with good fortune vs. the rich and greedy man who is punished for his failings forms the basis for this book. In this retelling, the "Aladdin's lamp" takes the shape of a small grinder. The comedy turns on the fact that the beneficiary of its largesse must know not only how to turn it on, but, more importantly, how to turn it off. After going through the expected twists and turns, this version unexpectedly adds a coda that explains how the sea became so salty. Watercolor illustrations show characters in European settings wearing circa 17th-century garb. As in other titles in this series, lines of dialog are indicated with thumbnail icons of the characters speaking, making the text appropriate for classroom use. Recommended for school or public libraries. M.O.B. Ballesteros, Xose. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
