El título está tomado de un poema de Borges. Ya somos el olvido que seremos, dice Borges y se trata, según el autor, de una "especie de memorial de agravios"- (p. 255) que "reúne y resume muchísimas de las muertes injustas que hemos padecido en un país tan fértil para la muerte" (p. 256). Con este libro intenta dejar "un testimonio, al mismo tiempo inútil y necesario" (p. 232) y con estas observaciones se dan los indicativos que orientan el canon al que se filia la escritura de este documento familiar.

El foco al que apunta el sentido esencial del texto es la muerte del padre, el médico Héctor Abad Gómez, ocurrida el 25 de agosto de 1987, ese momento cruel frente al cual el narrador siente la conmoción de una "tristeza seca, sin lágrimas. Una tristeza completa, pero anonadada e incrédula. Un asombro casi sereno ante el tamaño de la maldad, una rabia sin rabia, un llanto sin lágrimas, un dolor interior que no parece conmovido sino paralizado, una quieta inquietud" (p. 245). Así se traza un momento de la violencia colombiana que irrumpe en una familia de clase media y siembra un trastorno irresoluble en la vida del narrador que de este modo trata de rendir cuentas de esa memoria dolorosa.

Situado a la distancia suficiente para que "las palabras no salgan húmedas", este relato absorbe la escritura del libro con una actitud un tanto escéptica, como un volver a pasar por el corazón este amargo episodio, como "una prótesis para recordar, un intento desesperado por hacer un poco perdurable lo que es irremediablemente finito"(p. 255)y, por lo tanto, como el rescate de una historia familiar que ya está amenazada por la indiferencia y la disolución en la inercia de la vida de un país tan proclive a esa "peste del olvido" que llamó García Márquez. En el contexto familiar de una casa de diez mujeres, un niño y un señor, se teje la crónica de estos avatares de la vida colombiana en la provincia antioqueña, en una narración sesgada a la perspectiva subjetiva de una primera persona que conduce el relato con la notable sinceridad de un testimonio y el más auténtico despliegue de un "amor animal" hacia un padre que domina el escenario y la trama de los acontecimientos.
