Biography

Carlos Ruiz Zafón was born in Barcelona in 1964 and began his publishing career by writing novels for young adults. In 1993, he won the Edebé Children's Literature Award for his first book, El príncipe de la niebla. His debut in adult fiction, The Shadow of the Wind, spent more than a year on the Spanish bestseller list, much of the time at No. 1, and has been published in more than 20 countries.

The author currently lives in Los Angeles.

El Retorno de la Oscuridad

Calcuta, mayo de 1916.

Poco después de la medianoche, una barcaza emergió de la neblina nocturna que ascendía de la superficie del río Hooghly como el hedor de una maldición. A proa, bajo la tenue claridad que proyectaba un candil agonizante asido al mástil, podía adivinarse la figura de un hombre envuelto en una capa bogando trabajosamente hacia la orilla lejana. Más allá, al oeste, el perfil de Fort William en el Maidán se erguía bajo un manto de nubes de ceniza a la luz de un infinito sudario de faroles y hogueras que se extendía hasta donde alcanzaba la vista. Calcuta.

El hombre se detuvo unos segundos para recuperar el aliento y contemplar la silueta de la estación de Jheeter's Gate, que se perdía definitivamente en la tiniebla que cubría la otra orilla del río. A cada metro que se adentraba en la bruma, la estación de acero y cristal se confundía con otros tantos edificios anclados en esplendores olvidados. Sus ojos vagaron entre aquella selva de mausoleos de mármol ennegrecido por décadas de abandono y paredes desnudas a las que la furia del monzón había arrancado su piel ocre, azul y dorada y las había desdibujado como acuarelas desvaneciéndose en un estanque.

Tan sólo lacerteza de que apenas le quedaban unas horas de vida, quizá unos minutos, le permitió continuar la marcha, abandonando en las entrañas de aquel lugar maldito a la mujer a quien había jurado proteger con su propia vida. Aquella noche, mientras el teniente Peake emprendía su último viaje a Calcuta a bordo de una vieja barcaza, cada segundo de su vida se desvanecía bajo la lluvia que había llegado al amparo de la madrugada.

Al tiempo que luchaba por arrastrar la nave hacia la orilla, el teniente podía oír el llanto de los dos niños ocultos en el interior de la sentina. Peake volvió la vista atrás y comprobó que las luces de la otra barcaza parpadeaban apenas un centenar de metros tras él, ganando terreno. Podía imaginar la sonrisa de su perseguidor, saboreando la caza, inexorable.

Ignoró las lágrimas de hambre y frío de los niños y dedicó todas las fuerzas que le restaban a pilotar la nave hasta el margen del río que venía a morir en el umbral del laberinto insondable y fantasmal de las calles de Calcuta. Doscientos años habían bastado para transformar la densa jungla que crecía alrededor del Kalighat en una ciudad donde Dios no se habría atrevido a entrar jamás.

En pocos minutos la tormenta se había cernido sobre la ciudad con la cólera de un espíritu destructor. A mediados de abril y hasta bien entrado el mes de junio, la ciudad se consumía en las garras del llamado verano indio. Durante esos días, la ciudad soportaba temperaturas de 40 grados y un nivel de humedad al filo de la saturación. Minutos después, bajo el influjo de violentas tormentas eléctricas que convertían el cielo en un lienzo de pólvora, los termómetros podían descender treinta grados en cuestión de segundos.

El manto torrencial de la lluvia velaba la visión de los raquíticos muelles de madera podrida que se balanceaban sobre el río. Peake no cejó en su empeño hasta sentir el impacto del casco contra los maderos del muelle de pescadores y, sólo entonces, caló la vara en el fondo fangoso y se apresuró a buscar a los niños, que yacían envueltos en una manta. Al tomarlos en sus brazos, el llanto de los bebés impregnó la noche como el rastro de sangre que guía al depredador hasta su presa. Peake los apretó contra su pecho y saltó a tierra.

A través de la espesa cortina de agua que caía con furia se podía observar la otra barcaza aproximándose lentamente a la orilla como una nave funeraria. Sintiendo el latigazo del pánico, Peake corrió hacia las calles que bordeaban el Maidán por el sur y desapareció en las sombras de aquel tercio de la ciudad al que sus privilegiados habitantes, europeos y británicos en su mayoría, denominaban la ciudad blanca.

Tan sólo albergaba una esperanza de poder salvar la vida de los niños, pero estaba aún lejos del corazón del sector Norte de Calcuta, donde se alzaba la morada de Aryami Bosé. Aquella anciana era la única que podía ayudarle ahora. Peake se detuvo un instante y oteó la inmensidad tenebrosa del Maidán en busca del brillo lejano de los pequeños faroles que dibujaban estrellas parpadeantes al Norte de la ciudad. Las calles oscuras y enmascaradas por el velo de la tormenta serían su mejor escondite. El teniente asió a los niños con fuerza y se alejó de nuevo en dirección Este, en busca del cobijo de las sombras de los grandes edificios palaciegos del centro de la ciudad.

Instantes después, la barcaza negra que le había dado caza se detuvo junto al muelle. Tres hombres saltaron a tierra y amarraron la nave. La compuerta de la cabina se abrió lentamente y una oscura silueta envuelta en un manto negro recorrió la pasarela que los hombres habían tendido desde el muelle, ignorando la lluvia. Una vez en tierra firme, alargó su mano envuelta en un guante negro y, señalando hacia el punto donde Peake había desaparecido, esbozó una sonrisa que ninguno de sus hombres pudo ver bajo la tormenta.

La carretera oscura y sinuosa que cruzaba el Maidán y bordeaba la fortaleza se había transformado en un barrizal bajo los embates de la lluvia. Peake recordaba vagamente haber cruzado aquella parte de la ciudad durante sus tiempos de luchas callejeras a las órdenes del coronel Llewelyn, a plena luz del día y a las riendas de un caballo junto con un escuadrón del ejército sediento de sangre. El destino, irónicamente, le llevaba ahora a recorrer aquella extensión de campo abierto que Lord Clive había hecho arrasar en 1758 para que los cañones de Fort William pudieran disparar libremente en todas direcciones.     A fun quick read

    Zafon Characterizes this book, along with El Principe de la Niebla, Las Luces de Septiembre, and Marina--as children books. They should be read in that context. The Midnight Palace is the meeting place of a secret society (Chowbar Society) of seven orphaned children from the St. Patrick's orphanage in the 1930's Calcutta. There, Ben, a twin, is dumped on a rainy night by his grandmother in an effort to keep them safe from a ghost. At age sixteen, the orphans are released to face life as adults and on the last meeting of the Chowbar Society, Sheere, Ben's twin is made a member of the society. Together the society solves the mystery of the twins tragic history and fight the dangers that confronts all of them. Not as good as La sombra del viento or el Juego del Angel, but still makes for a great read.
